My insurance company recently paid out on my 1966 Fender Jazz. They claimed the bass was not a total write off. Sadly I am not left with enough money for a year correct neck, and after 4 months arguing they threatened to not pay atall!

I played Fender 58 years this coming November 2015. I am attached to my instruments. I feel robbed as I paid this insurance company for 34 years! Now I am over 70 and a pensioner. This is hard!

So here is my problem. I know I can buy a Fender RI neck. But I want to keep a 66 truss rod, but all I can find are Hex Head type in the heal or Head. It'll make the whole bass appear bogus and it just ruins the vibe. Mine is (was) in the heal. Can I change to an original X type TR head, and if so do fender still produce them (are they availible please?

A guy told me some 60's Jazz had the T:Rod in the head. What years was that cos I don't recall any that age with a head TR? thanks for your interest and patience.

Your recollections are correct, B/B -- the trussrod adjustment for the Jazz Bass was not relocated to the headstock until 1975 (which coincided roughly with the introduction of the 3-screw "micro-tilt" neck and the deletion of the strap button from the reverse side of the headstock).

In your situation I would buy a replacement "tuxedo" neck from Allparts. They're available with either maple or rosewood fretboard, with the period-correct edge binding and block inlays. Any competent luthier should be able to "age" it to match your instrument's existing finish and transfer your hardware to the new neck, then do a full set-up for a nominal fee (I'd guess $150 more or less, unless your original neck featured a painted headstock and you wish to have it finished to match the body color). The Allparts tuxedo necks are beautiful (I've bought two in the past) and are among the best available on the aftermarket.

Hi Brother, and thank you for your support and advice. I just read your comments today friday 09/25/15 due to my being dumb and forgetting I had left that question. However I do appreciate your comments and will go to try and find an all parts dealer. I'm English living in Spain. I have not found the UK all parts have the stock US dealers have but I will also check out ebay.
I still have my 66 jazz in bits butI have a neck pup arriving nect week and I think that all I need except the neck. I hate to waste a good trus rods though
While here can I ask your further advice? I have a lot of relics of bands gone by and I have 2 other jazz bodies that pre date Fenders stupid idea of routing huge amounts of body out. However they are both a little different to each other although I bought both from Fender. The first one I bought from fender was in 1961. It's amusing that Fender don't know me. I bought 1.000' of$ of kit from them in the 60's!
Is there a profiler I can use to determine which one goes where? For your info I still have bakerlite saddles on a 53 P Bass thats also in bits in a box. This year I want to assemble them all. They must be worth a few bob (money) these days. Sorry I use English words you may not know, but I speak Spanish most of the time so its nice to write! Well if life give you time and you feel inclined to, I would love to hear more from you. God Bless
ps I have now enabled the 'notify me' option so I will get an email if you reply!

Here's what the Allparts neck looks like, installed on a MIM Jazz Bass and configured to resemble a 1966 instrument......

Image

The maple edition they offer looks just as authentic.

Allparts sells direct to the public should you choose to order parts from them -- go to allparts.com to see a complete list of their inventory.

Wow that looks beatiful. My bass don't look that brit and shiney after decades of near destruction exoeriences. My 66 Jazz was painted a blue. Think it was called Dafne blue. I paid a luthier in Germany, But when I got it back it looked like it had beed painted in a custom Dune Buggy shop. The blue screamed at me for years. I got all the blue off myself, but the bass original colour 2 tone burst think they call it, still has blue in the screw holes. I never wanted to refinish anything after that!

I just been to the AllParts site and found that neck. Unfortunately it would cost me around $800 + but I found they have a UK branch and managed to back order what looks close to the one you have and I wont have to pay $150 shipping and 21% import duty so I am a whole lot happier. I have a maple jazz neck that cost me $100 US and I got it from the same Chinese company fender are now buying from. So I can go ahead and do a re build and finish it pretty much. It could be 2 months before the new neck gets to the UK so at least I can do that. I am also rebuilding my 60's P bass. Cano't remember if 62 was the year I bought it or the year it was made!!
Thanks for the great lead and all the encouragment. A big boost for me. I cant see how to attach photos on this screan. Soon as I can show you something I will. Muchisimo Gracias y embrazo hermano bajista

Por nada, Señor.

To post pics here, you'll need to upload them to a remote hosting site such as Photobucket. The service is free and relatively easy to use once you learn to navigate the site.
