Ok, this is my ever so jadded opinion as always, but in my mind, be it complete newbie, someone just getting back into it or someone just looking to brush up their chops, the BEST way, in my never so humble opinion is, wow...JUST PLAY!

Yes, I too am a BIG fan of Youtube...you can usually find some great tuts for popular material if you're trying to work something specific out. That said, take a look around for "jam tracks" as well...particularly for brushing up on your lead work, this is a GREAT practice resource!!! On Youtube alone you can find jam tracks for pretty much any style/genre you can imagine. Seriously...wish we had of had Youtube around back when I was in my teens!

If you're looking for more specific tunes, also check out http://www.guitarbackingtrack.com/ as they have a ton of tunes from a wide variety of artists.

BTW...say it with me - "Google is my friend!", LOL! Just Google jam tracks or backing tracks and you should find a virtual ton of resources to get those finger back into shape!

So stop reading this, go download yourself some mp3's AND PLAY!

:-)

Best of luck!

These are all great suggestions so I'll just add a site called JamPlay. www.jamplay.com
Good luck and, more importantly, have fun!

Reading music on the guitar is crucial.
The EADGC system allows fingering combinations not possible
on other stringed instruments.

So TAB's are helpful especially if they are transcribed by someone as David Whitehill, whose fine ears will lead you close to the original fingering.
They do not, however, necessarily fit the music
nor the absolute technique of the guitar if there is one

A fine book to get an understanding of the system is:

A friend of mine, a tenor player once told me:

"How do you get a guitar player to shut up ?
Give him something to read"
