Hey guys. I just am righting to see if anyone had any good advice for online lessons. I know that there are a bunch of sites out there and some of them seem bogus while others seem legit. I have been playing guitar for almost 20 years. About 3-5 years ago I lost interest and life kicked my $@! so I put my musician dreams advise for awhile. I'm kinda rusty and I have been refreshing basics and all that. Still got it but my mind has become fuzzy and I feel like there is always room for improvement. Does anyone have any good recommendations? I have basic scales chrod structre a little bit of theory can read tabs. looking for break downs of songs and also improvement in lead areas.

Nothing beats a good teacher and the personal one-to-one attention and encouragement.

Thanks for the reply. I mean I don't need someone to hold my hand and go through the basics. When i was playing before I got good enough to make a 1000 a week playing bars and what not.And then I just stopped and life went on and for some reason I cant remember any of the songs I knew and im having a hard time getting that feel back I had. I have been going over scales and chords and focusing on pentatonic and all that. But I cant really read tabs very well with some more of the advanced stuff unless it has the standered notation too. I just really don't know if I should go see a teacher and do the one on one thing and if I do how much is that going to cost? And what should I look for in my area. I remember one time i had a guy that I went to that flat out was a dick.. I have heard about some online classes that you can Skype with and all that? maybe? THe first person that taught me I wish was still around they where the best.. Im in Denver so Idk if anyone can recommend anyone or not?

So, it sounds like you have some chops (or had) and now you just wanna learn some songs.
I just play along with a song to learn it.
The stereo is OK for that but the computer is better because you can just use the slider to repeat a section if you can't quite figure out a particular chord or chord voicing or fill.
I just get an MP3 of the song I wanna learn and then I play along.
Might work for you too.

Another option is the TASCAM trainers. They make a range of products that allow you to play along with a song and most of them give the options of slowing it down and transposing up or down. There is also usually a looping feature where you can select a segment of a track to repeat. Example: you wanna learn a Stevie Ray song but you're not interested in retuning between the songs you're learning. (Stevie played in Eb) You just press a couple buttons and transpose it up a half step and away you go. Of course the more you fiddle with it, transposing and altering speed, the more distortion creeps in but who cares? It's just for learning purposes.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Ok. Thanks man. I really appreciate it. I am going to check out that and see if that helps. I really want to get some songs back. I know that you just hve to practice a lot and keep at it. I remember that I ised to practice songs for like months to try to get each part right. I still can play a lot of Srv but there are just some pets that don't sound right. I think it might be my set up. And I'm going over scales and chords again just refreshing. Your gear looks great man.

Back in the day when I was first beginning to tackle the basics, I wore out three copies of Cream's "Disraeli Gears" trying to learn all the riffs on that album. Ultimately I got most of them down but at $4.99 a pop (+ tax) those "lessons" weren't exactly cheap.

The MP3 route played via computer is definitely the way to go now.

I really gotta say that I -wish- Youtube had of been around when I was first learning! Not only can you usually find most of the tunes you may be interested in with only a couple of mouse clicks, there's TONS of lessons and other info for picking up licks and tricks.

Also, if you haven't discovered these already - look for "jam tracks". Again, wish they had of had these when I was a kid. While many can be found on Youtube (for example just search "blues jamtrack in A"), there's a few websites out there where you can download the mp3's right to your computer...my favorite is;

http://www.guitarbackingtrack.com/

Beyond that, my best advice is...wow...just play! Don't worry about teachers or forums or anything like that, just grab your guitar and go where ever the music takes you! Whether you're at your computer or using a portable mp3 player (or even a cassette or CD or...uhhgg...an 8 track) or you're simply sitting on your back porch with an acoustic, the important thing is to get those fingers moving and get those calluses built up again! Once you get a few chops back, maybe look at some local clubs for "jam nights" or even post an ad on Craigslist "looking for others to jam with". Seriously...in the time that it took you to read this, you COULD have simply been jamming along with your favorite tune!

Now go grab your guitar and get to it! 8)

Ok, I only started playing a year ago, but wow, what is on youtube is incredible. Other than technical advice, some insight as well.

Probably the best advice I found, was in searching for a Neil Young song and the guy posting the lesson showed how to play it on the album, but then said that he was a huge Young fan and saw him play the song at least 10 times live and that Young never played it exactly the same. Then suggested that unless you were in a cover band, that really, you should concentrate on the feeling of a song more than getting it like the album.

Anyway, while I can't credit who said this, it was really freeing to me playing.

FWIW

Best!

If you can read standard notation, why bother with tabs? I use tabs as a shortcut because I'm not the best reader. If you're more of a reader, I would just keep working on that.

As stated above, playing along with recordings is a great way to go. Both full songs AND backing tracks for practicing improv/solos. I used to play along with the first 'Zeppelin album alot because it has lots of blues.

I'm in similar situation started 20 years ago and stopped some 5-6!years ago, life eh, kid etc.. So for past few moths I've been slowly coming back with practice any moment I catch, so far left hand got back fully, right is still bit rhythmically dead, but finger pickin is coming back. You tube has been a great help (didn't get that when I was starting) so just play and play and play. I also forgot most of the theory but been refreshing it so it helps finding the right places on the neck and what goes before or after, licks etc... Just stick with it and it will come back.
Private teacher would be great above all things.

I tried the free trial version of Anytune ( see http://anytune.us/ ) for my iPod touch and ended up paying a few bucks (5$ at the time, I think) for Anytune Pro. I forget what all the differences are, but I do recall that the trial version would slow down to 50% and the Pro version goes down to 30% without a lot of distortion. It also will transpose by fractions of semitones, so it's good for those tunes that are just slightly detuned (eg. "Lola" by the Kinks). It has several loop options too.
