It should be noted that no surge protector will protect against lightning strikes. That's a common belief that is entirely false. The surges they can handle are minor irregularities from the power company. If you could find a surge protector capable of fending off lightning attacks it would likely cost you enough to financially ruin you for life. Five billion joules is a lot of surge to deal with.

Too many surge protector are just a "toys" with their 400 joules protection

I'm sure most people don't know what to buy and what to no buy

I had an older home that about the longest light bulbs in the house lasted as about 2 weeks. I measure using a good Fluke meter, freshly calibrated and found what should have been around 120-122 volts was in fact 148 vac. Long story shore the electric company came out and adjusted the line voltage to specification;.

Many modern UPSes will show the line voltage, as well as ensuring that what you get out from the battery is the right voltage (120V,230V,240V) for where you are. Because you also get the power from the battery and not the wall, you're also isolated from ground faults and EM noise in the system, and feed your amp pretty clean power.
And they cost you a fraction of what "pro musician" power conditioner units cost - a good 1000VA UPS will cost you around $120 (and around half that in battery replacements every 2-3 years). In my opinion, they're well worth it.

I'm not a big fan of surge protectors in general.

When a surge protector takes a "hit", it's kind of like rolling bowling balls at a pile of snow. The snow will stop the first few bowling balls, but as it does, the snow will flatten. After a while, the bowling balls will roll right over the flattened snow.

Surge protectors have a finite amount of times they can protect your equipment, and there's no way of knowing how many more "hits" it can take before it's ineffective (flattened snow).

Yes and if you drive your car enough you will eventually have a wreck. All I can tell you is when we moved into our house in 1999 from then until about 2003 we had voltage surges from lightning and other reasons that took out some appliances and found from neighbors this was a common ocurrance at least every 3-5 years. Some caused by lots of trees in our heavily wooded area touching the high voltage lines. I installed surge protection on our breaker box and on computers TVs etc and from then until now we have been good. Lights do flicker at times when trees touch the lines or severe lighting storms still but so far so good

I think you're missing the point. It's like having tires on your car that will completely disappear and you have no way of knowing when or where they are going to disappear. You'll just hear the screeching of bare rims on asphalt and know it happened.

No disrespect intended, I understand your point but it is like " don't buy a car because its tires will eventually fail. Just continue walking in the rain and hope you don't get hit by lightning"

A good quality Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is the way to go if you can afford it. Since the devices run off battery power 100% of the time, they are isolated from the electrical circuit, which continuously charges the batteries. In the event of a power outage, it also should give you a few seconds of battery power to properly shut down your equipment. They are simply a far superior solution to a power strip - ask anyone that maintains computer servers.

I use an uninterruptible power supply and worked well for 4 years until a battery shorted and nearly burnt the thing up. Good thing I caught it as the sides began to bubble from the heat.

You should swap out the batteries periodically, based on the manufacturer's recommendation. They usually don't explode if you do that. Remember, these are used in big important computer server rooms.
