Hi,
I have a Jaguar and a Jazzmaster both Classic Players with the same tremolo system. The thing is that I really don't understand how is it works and how to set it up. I really need to know how to setup this system cuz the tremolo bar is almost touching the strings and it's very difficult to use. I'd also appreciate if you have a document with the "lock" function description.

your thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Jaguarnoise,

For your tremolo arm being too close to the strings; you can remove the tremolo arm by simply pulling upward until it come out. Then, go to a door in your house, remove one of the hinge pins and place the end of your tremolo arm in the door hinge and bend the arm up or down as needed. Do it slowly so you don't crack the finish off the tremolo arm.

Here is a web page that covers a lot on Jazzmaster/Jaguar. Scroll down to find the section on the temolo:

Hope this helps.

Jerry

OK, here goes
1: So, confirming you got the Adjusto-Matic™ Bridge with Vintage Style "Floating" Tremolo Tailpiece and Tremolo Lock Button
2: The setup isn't too different from any guitar setup, so here's some basic reading: Fender guitar setup guide
Same principles apply on relief, action, intonation etc.
Notes: a. In my experience, the JM and Jag often benefit from shimming the neck (especially with the traditional style bridge), but the need for a shim is of course case-by-case evaluation. b. Occasional buzzing in the bridge can be cured with shimming (increasing the neck angle -> more downforce on the bridge), sometimes a drop of clear nail polish on the intonation screws helps, too. c. These models are (IMHO) easier to setup with thicker string gauges, so don't plan on .008's or even .009's.
3: Takes a little getting used to. On the other hand, many regard this the best Fender trem there is... If it feels totally awkward, you can bend the trem arm - carefully.
Oh: it ain't for divebombing, rather for a little shimmering effect.
4: The lock button function explained, along with other helpful hints:
webrocker.de Jag trem setup

1-4: Compared to let's say a Tele, these guitars are a tad kinkier to setup.
If you know of a good luthier who let's you follow what he/she is doing, might be wise to let one of the guitars be setup by him/her, then do the other yourself.
If you go by trial and error, it takes a little practice - start with factory recommended settings & experiment.

Thank you guys!!! I'll open the trem plate on my next strings change so I can take a better look at this system. In the meantime I'll keep reading about the lock system and its function over the intonnation, which I don't understand yet. :S
Regarding question 3, it's like the bar goes to deep into the plate hole, that's maybe the problem with the distance between the strings and the trem arm.
My trem arm has thread and it always hits to the cable jack. I'd like it to stay in a more playable position if it's possible. I've found a YouTube video where a guy gets the trem arm in the position what I believe is the best.

PS: Next strings: Erine Ball Not even Slinky 12-16-24p-32-44-56

The lock button should not affect intonation at all - you use the tremolo tension screw so the trem is balanced against the string tension. It's in the links, don't panic, you'll get there

It's a Classic Player, so I'll rely on internet wisdom, proceed with caution: Under the trem plate you should find a screw to adjust how deep the trem arm goes. (Old school ways include using a Strat trem arm spring, teflon tape etc. to tighten the trem arm.)
Bending the arm: if you don't have a suitable hinge, clamp a piece of suitable diameter steel pipe to a vice.

If you go from stock .010's to .012's, you may need to check the nut grooves (in addition to the full setup which comes naturally).
And: remember to lube (every contact point of the strings/guitar, plus in the tremolo).
