I am looking into possible running my Hot Rod Deluxe to an external cabinet with either 2X12 or 4X10 speaker configuration. I am wondering if this is recommended and if so, what type of cabinet I should be looking into?

You should select a cabinet whose total impedance is 8 ohms if you intend to use it in conjunction with the amp's integral speaker.

That is correct, but let me add that if you plan to run only an external cabinet and disconnect the internal speaker, you should use the main speaker output jack to connect the external cabinet. The only time you can safely use the external speaker jack is when the main speaker jack is already connected to a speaker load. Total impedance for the amp is 4 ohms - the internal speaker is 8 ohms so you can add another 8-ohm load with no problem.

If you plan to use only an external cabinet, then the cabinet size and speaker configuration doesn't matter as long as it's 4-16 ohms and you connect it to the main speaker output jack.

Not exactly.

The primary speaker jack is 8 ohms. Inserting anything into the extension jack switches both jacks to the output tranny's 4 ohm tap. Thus, both jacks being wired in parallel will operate most efficiently with an 8-ohm load connected to each of them. If 4-ohm operation is desired using only a single speaker (or speaker enclosure) a "dummy" plug should be inserted into the primary speaker jack and the 4-ohm load should be connected to the extension jack.

Ok, so if i want to run two amps through one cap, splitting the speakers. I could use a 4x12 cabinet as long as each speaker can handle 4 ohms?
