I've been putting a long paper together on this topic, which I hope to get published..but here are a few of the topics of interest.

1) Plane of vibration: Strings don't just vibrate back and forth...they can also vibrate up and down, or even in circles! What effect does this have on interaction with the pickup? You may be surprised!

2)FM tidbits. Did you know that every time you pluck a string, you have harmonics and overtones that are FREQUENCY modulated by the fundamental string resonance? We explain why certain strings are almost impossible to tune.

3) Playing the Loops. Not so much a physics discussion, but a playing method. Do you want a dark, mysterious, and unique sound with your single string riffs? Learn to pick on the LOOPS....the precise mid position between the fret and the bridge. Actually, there is some neat physics that explains why this sounds like it does...but even if you're clueless it sounds super cool!

4) How to get the sound you want with a solid state amp. Impossible? No. We'll show you how.

5) LOWER YOUR PICKUPS! Related to topic #1....keeping your pickups LOW makes them less susceptible to "plane of vibration" weirdness Your intonation will be better too. We'll explain why

6) Toward a quadrature pickup. We describe here an experimental pickup system that takes advantage of both lateral and vertical string vibration

Stay TUNED!
Eric

This is going to be either extremely interesting or way-beyond-area51-weird.

Now this is interesting. I was aware of 1), that strings vibrate in ellipsoids, and 2) the harder you pick, the more higher-energy modes you can excite. You can actually see that with your DAW. However, the FM aspect is intriguing, as is the rest. I'm looking forward to reading this!

Hopefully the Cupertinos will put up a good fight for our beloved assemply line when the UN troops attack from their secret base in California.

The NSA's "Echelon" group probably located him via his IP address and sent the MIB's around to take him back to......

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
