Hi everyone,

I was playing recently, and as the days have been going on, I've getting the feeling more and more that my action was too high, particularly on the 3 higher strings. In the past I've only had setup and intonation completed by a guitar tech, and I never mess with the truss rod or even string height by myself. Am I wrong to believe that naturally my Strat needs a truss rod adjustment? I mean, I never specifically touched the action, and I do know that overtime the tross rod needs adjustment. Excuse my noobness, I'm just trying to isolate the problem here.

Thanks!

If you feel the action has changed, it probably has. Time for another set up. You can easily learn how to do a set up yourself. Google it and you tube it. Good luck.

Setting the neck relief with the truss rod adjuster isn't difficult. Get yourself a capo and a set of feeler gauges, go slow and don't tighten more than an eighth of a turn turn at a time. There's a good how-to on the Fender support site.

Read the material provided by Fender and others and learn what the different adjustments do and to recognize which ones need tweaked. For the past several years I've done all my own setup and once I had a grasp on which adjustments effect what it's certainly increased my playing enjoyment. I usually start by simply holding the headstock toward a light and sighting up the neck to make sure there is some neck relief, and if there is not, that is where I start. Once the neck relief is proper I then go on to set action height, intonation, etc., as shown in Fender's set up guide. :D

Setting up intonation and string height isn't rocket science, but it does take patience. You DO want to be consistent with your strings....a perfect setup for one gauge can be totally wrong for a different one!
As mentioned above, you CAN learn to do it, but it's best to sit at the feet of a pro. With youtube videos, caveat emptor. :)

You're right, but do it yourself will save you money and will get you to know your instrument better. Having said that, I'm still in the process to get the action/intonation/neck relief right, but just wondering, is there an average setup, or a standard that one can use as a starting point?
Cheers,
m.

I think every guitar maker has "factory recommendations" for tremolo adjustments, relief, action, pickup height etc.

For Fenders: this page, upper right corner "Support" -> "How-to-guides" -> choose the appropriate setup guide for your instrument.

BTW, a hint for all those learning to DIY: follow the order on the setup guide, too.
