Hi I have an American special and I've played it for two months. I'm realizing that the second tone knob has no function. I've checked it at every toggled position. Is it miswired or because of the Greasebucket setup? I'm afraid to try to open my guitar and look. Is this the way my second tone knob should be?

I have a loaded pickgaurd I took out of a 2006 Highway One Strat and put in my Partscaster or Fankinstrat (whichever you prefer) and it has 'Greasebucket' wiring. Both my tone pots function properly still 13 years later; so I'm guessing you have an issue with your wiring. SOMEONE'S gonna have to take it apart at some point if you want it fixed.

Thanks. That's what I figured. Not a huge deal. USA made ain't what it used to be anyway. I'm kick the idea of getting rid of the Texas pickups and the Greasebucket, but I kinda like the fact my strat is a little different. Thanks again!!!

On the American Special, Tone #1 impacts only the neck pickup, Tone #2 only the bridge. The middle pickup alone has no tone control, in positions 2 and 4 it goes along for the ride with the other pickup.
Sounds like the wire connecting the tone pot to the 5-way, or ground may have failed.

Awesome ty got it. Opened it up and looked at it good. I couldn't see at first what it was. Had to take the neck off because it pinched the pickgaurd and looking very closely they just never soldered one prong to a transistor, or resistor... The little brown electric component. Disaster averted! Either way I'll probably never buy another new model from fender. The good stuff has already been built.
