Need a little help from my friends. I'm trying to play the Loner by Gary Moore. Using a Fender Strat American Special, and a Mustang III v2 amp. I can't get the sound " just right. " Any suggestions for amp settings and pickup positions will be appreciated. What preset do you think will do it? I think I've tried all 99 of them. I also have a Fender Champion 40 if you think that would make a difference. Played by Tina S, it sounds as though there is a lot of base in her rendition. Sounds good to me and I'd like to duplicate it. I also have a PRS SE, a Squire Tele, and a Epiphone Les Paul Tribute if you think any of these might be a better choice. Surely appreciate any help. Tks.

You will likely want to install a humbucker in the bridge position of your American Special Stratocaster.
Or use another humbucker equipped guitar.
As far as the amp settings go, I am not familiar with your amp but I can point you in the right direction to work at building that tone from scratch.
Gary Moore prefers to use a Marshall Plexi so I would start with that.
He typically uses overdrive boxes for his effects like a TS9 or an OD-1 but on this one I suspect he's got a fuzz in there.
He has also been known to use a DS-1 from time to time.
Again, in this one I suspect it's fuzz.
It could possibly be a T-Rex Mudhoney as he has used it in the past and it is something like a cross between a DS-1 and a fuzz.
You may want to try both at the same time and back off on the drive of both.
There is also a small amount of delay in there, some reverb and a good amount of compression.
I am tempted to suggest some small amount of chorus may be present there as well but the trouble with that is that Gary is not known for using chorus.
That said, this is a video done in a studio rather than a live situation and it is possible the studio guys added some processing.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I knew I could count on you, been reading your posts for years. I can't pick up on all the little nuances like you do. I have good bit of hearing loss from military. I get chills every time I listen to The Loner. I appreciate the info, but money is a big issue when it comes to equipment. I now know a lot more than I did before. Again, thanks for your time and input on this .

I'm humbled.
I can't think of any time when ever I received a higher online praise.
Please accept my thanks for your kind words.

As I said above, I am unsure of how your amp works.
I guess I just assumed it works like most other modelling devices.
You select an amp model, you select some effects and you tweak it all and then save your preset.
That was the general gist of my meaning in your situation.
It was my intended suggestion that you attempt to find these things in your amp menus.
Again, I don't know the Mustangs well.
My apologies if that is not an option.

BTW, I realize now, after the fact, the Mudhoney wasn't avaiable back then.
Go with a DS-1 and a fuzz.
We are, after all, only human.
LOL

On a personal note, I have spent the better part of my life working with steel.
I feel fortunate and blessed to have been mentored back in those early years by a man who stressed the importance of hearing protection.

I can recall going to a small house party in my youth when the herb was burning and the booze was flowing and I was being asked by a young woman the hypothetical question, if I had to chose between losing my eyesight or my hearing which I would choose.
I remember it did not take me long to choose.
I chose to hear instead of see.
I told her I might live a safer and more productive life with eyesight rather than hearing but my life would be fuller and have more meaning if I could still listen to music.
Yup.
I got lucky.
She liked that answer.
LOL

I may not be American but I still thank you for your service just the same.
You have my empathy for your hearing loss.

Know what you mean! I don't copy other players much, but I do play this tune as it can be done solely as an instrumental (and I can't sing!).

Agreed you ideally need a humbucker, but I do it on a TS-equipped Am Special, same as yours. Due to age etc, I've ditched heavy amps and I just go through the Line 6 Classic Distortion (Rat impersonation), and the Bassman amp sim, straight into the PA. So it can be done, although to be fair it's easier to get the sustain with a humbucker. Depends on how much volume you can use!

I'm assuming you're referring to Gary's performances circa 1985, when he used a Charvel 'Strat', equipped with 1 bridge humbucker. I loved his output from that era! :D

Cheers - Peter.
