I just picked up a mexican strat for $10! I know 0 about electric guitars but I'm anxious to learn. I'm trying to set up the guitar and it looks to me like there is no truss rod in the neck of this guitar. There's a hole there that goes down about 3/4". But Ive tried every allen wrench I have (and I have lots of allen wrenches) and they are all too small. I have a friends' strat here too and I can see the allen wrench hole in its' neck. It takes a 1/8th " wrench. Can I purchase a truss rod for it or perhaps it just needs the very top of the rod where the wrench fits. Can anyone help me with this? Any suggestions will be much appreciated. Thanx :)

1/8" is the correct key size.

Use a flashlight and a mirror to peer down the hole and examine the adjustment head.
You may discover it is stripped out or possibly missing altogether.
It is entirely possible there is a very good reason why you got the guitar for 10 bucks.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

For a MIM Strat, 3/16" could just as well be the key size.
And there is the question if it really is a MIM Fender, the 10$ price could/should rise suspicions. If not, metric keys (I've met 4mm; 4,5mm; 5mm on Squiers) might fit.

So, maybe post some pics. The forum usually can tell at least something about the guitar.

And BTW, if it's a MIM Strat, the 10$ plus about 80$ for a pro setup would still be a bargain.
Especially if the nut is worn round, and you have the "know 0 about electric guitars" situation, use a pro at least for that.
