Dear Sir Or Madam, I am new to this forum so if this has been already asked and answered, I apologize. I have a new Squier Jazz Bass and when the tone pot is all the way up, I get a lot of buzz in the amp. If I turn the tone knob down or touch a string or the bridge, the buzz goes away.

Thoughts?

Very Respectfully,

Tom

The fact that the buzz goes away when you touch the metal parts of the bass tells that the bass is grounded normally.

The buzz is your bass pickup picking up some electrical interference - could be the typical single coil behaviour (60/50 cycle hum), or almost any other electrical device in the house.

Shielding may reduce the buzz to some extent, but I'd guess you never get totally buzz free with those pickups.

BTW, yours could be the most polite first post in the forum history. :D

Good question Tom, and excellent answer jmattis.

Such is the case with pickups and shielding. My Strat has noiseless pickups and a lot of shielding. For my purpose, that works; but, there are trade offs. My acoustic has none of that, and there can be feedback, and so on, much of which can be controlled with placement and other adjustments.

I think jmattis pretty much has it right, but unlike all the Forum bass players here, I am unfamiliar with your bass hands on. The principles of pickup choice, grounding, and shielding are well known, however.

If you can, you might want to try a similar setup elsewhere, or your amp with a similar Squier Jazz Bass or your bass with another amp. This may or may not be to your liking, but it will give you a reference for expectations and familiarity.
