Stupid question...
Can someone please explain a typical live rack setup. I was watching a few rig rundowns and I'm wondering why you would use a preamp and poweramp along with a head... isn't a head just a simplified preamp and poweramp? Also why so many heads... are they spares or do they switch between heads during the show for different tones or do they use multiple heads st the same time. I know this is a very silly question but my curiosity got the better if me and I can't find a good answer by google search.
Many thanks!

Depending on whom we are talking about the answer is sometimes yes to all the above.
Complex switching could allow a guy to access more than one amplifier, presumably one at a time but not necessarily.
I have run two amps at once before and I really like how it sounds.
They say SRV would use a dozen amps in the studio, all at once.
Custom Audio makes a device that allows several amp heads (up to 4, I think) to be connected to one cabinet or series of cabs.
When a guy has the money to pay others to create rigs for him, there is no limit.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Two amps are commonly run for different reasons.
First, when you run tube amps live, a pro will always have a backup. Tubes can fail at any time.
Second, an effects channel and a dry channel. Effects compress your dynamics. To maintain dynamic punch, the clean amp is the main sound and effects are dialed in as needed.
Third, amps sound different. They are one trick ponies to a certain extent. You can't get jazz or country properly out of a rock amp. So different genres require different amp circuits for best performance.
