Hi,

I just bought a 1996 Mexican Strat and it works fine - but the pickups look odd to me. I'm guessing, perhaps, a cover of some sort has been removed. All three pickups have the same look - odd looking voids and torn up edges. Can anyone confirm my conclusion? Also, can replacement covers be bought?

Here's a close up photo:

More information needed

Post pictures under the pickguard.
Some covers may fit some not

It certainly looks like a previous owner removed the pickup covers -- not really wise since the cover protects the windings from damage by foreign objects or errant fingers. Fender does sell accessory sets that include replacement covers (in various colors) and there are aftermarket parts available as well (with an even broader selection of colors) but be advised: all of these covers are generally intended to fit true single coil pickups. They usually will NOT fit Fender's Vintage Noiseless, SCN's, N3's, or any other type/brand of stacked-coil humbucker. Take a look beneath your pickguard to ascertain precisely which pickups you have BEFORE ordering any parts.

And Stratele is right -- specific guitar problems should be posted in their respective forum(s), ie: "Stratocaster", "Telecaster", "Other". You'll get more responses that way.

I've recently played this guitar at a gig - I used this as my main guitar for all three sets. During one of the sets the e string strings got hung up (twice) in the pickup so I had to ask for tape during our performance. Luckily, the sound person was able to grab some green painter's tape. I think the green tape looks kind of cool. But, yeah, I need to do something with these pickups.
