You'll find some tasty guitar melodies within the Doobie Brothers catalog as well. Toulouse Street and The Captain And Me both feature some fine instrumental work.

The first solo I ever learned note-for-note was the Ritchie Blackmore's from "Smoke on the Water."

The world of surf guitar provides some relatively simple-but-fun melodies, ie. "Apache" by the Shadows and "Walk, Don't Run" by the Ventures.

After 20 years at the violin ? Seriously ?

1. Try J.S.Bach - The Goldberg Variations

2. Play them Paganini Capriccios on the guitar,
like every dedicated metal head does

3. Pat Martino - Linear Expressions

4. Joe Diorio - Variations on "Giant Steps" by John Coltrane

You're kidding, aren't you

No, I'm not kidding :) It is true I have a decent amount of sheet music on a treble clef that I have played over the years. The sad thing is I took the violin up as a graduate school student and have never had a chance to play in a real group. So I've played the Bach Double Concerto (not at the same speed as professionals) as a duet with my teacher - but never played in an orchestra. As a kid I didn't have the opportunity to play an instrument in band/orchestra.

I really appreciate all of the suggestions - they have been really great!

Some suggestions get moderated,
I do not know why ?

Why do u as a violin player just join a band ?

I know it is painful and most of the time disappointing,
but keep on trying...

There is a band for everyone

if you mean forum admins changing or deleting your post - I seriously doubt that. There is very little moderation on this forum.

Another avenue to explore would be Maury Muhleisen. He was the backing guitarist for Jim Croce. Granted Maury did not play electric, but his stuff was melodic and flowed. Could help bridge the classical to pop/rock world.

The solo in I Got a Name jumps to mind.

+1

The solo and riffs in "Time In A Bottle" are also quite pleasing.

Hi There,
Sorry I've been away for a while. I have been enjoying my new journey playing the electric guitar. I really appreciate all of the suggestions that have been provided. I did pick up a pink floyd book and have been trying out bits and pieces of 'Money' (the easy part at the beginning), and some "Wish you were here" . Honestly on the latter one I just decided to start trying it more seriously to pay attention to the timing. My instructor is focused on a recital he wants to have and for that reason I've been practicing a piece that I really picked up for singing to it and it is not so much 'soloing' guitar but a lot of chords. I have a lot more respect now for playing those chords, and am not constantly gaining more respect for them! I'm playing the theme song from SkyFall - I'm a bit of a James Bond theme fangirl when it comes down to it (not all of them, but a lot of them).
I picked up Derek and the Dominoes (I think mostly way too hard for me but one can dream), Ozzy (I can dream here too, right ?) , some Fleetwood Mac as well for singing to as well.

Thanks again for all of the wonderful suggestions, I'm going to take a fresh look at all of them!

Bond, James Bond. you are among vocalists extraordinaire, Paul McCartney and Axl Rose among them.

You can't go wrong with either of these:

Yngwie Malmsteen - Paganini 4th Violin Concerto

or

Steve Vai - For the Love of God
