Hi everyone, I am new to the electric guitar. I've been playing classical violin for 20 years - so let's say I'm used to reading music above 'G' and the notes on a violin
I'm slowly picking up where the notes are on the guitar, and taking lessons so I hope to learn to play 'right'

Anyway I'm looking for some interesting solos that are not say monotonic and easy but not so difficult that it looks like the page is filled with too many notes (anyone see Amadeus?? I don't really mean there is such a thing as too many notes lol).

Anyway something that would sound like a nice recital piece ? Any genre I'm open to them all.

Thanks so much!!

Dee

A thousand answers to this one, but a few that I have had some success with:

The Derek and the Dominos version of "Key to the Highway" has a bunch of sweet solos that aren't too hard, and have a nice mix of major and minor pentatonic as well. It's in the key of A, one of the easier keys for blues and rock on the guitar. And some nice turnarounds too.

Sticking with Clapton for a little longer, the solo section of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" is not too hard except for one really fast part, and again it's a clinic in how to mix major and minor in your solos. Key of D.

And a good piece in good ol' E minor pentatonic: Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well".

I know this has lots of answers but I do really appreciate your very thoughtful answer. I've bought music that I like for some reason or another but I don't know that I bought anything that is a good learning tool Or a good piece got guitar.

Thanks for your take on answering this question!
Much appreciated!

Dee

If I could name one song in which the two solos contained within are the very definition of taste, soul and creativity without going a zillion miles an hour, it would be Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb. In my mind those two solos are the gold standard by which every other single solo in existence is judged by and comes up woefully short. Even if you're not a Floyd fan it is in your best interest to take a really close listen. In that song, Dave refreshes GOD's memory about what beautiful music sounds like. When He hears it, he's like, "Oh, yah. I forgot. Dave, I don't care what you did. You get a free pass."

"Comfortably Numb" is a great song with two diametrically-contrasted solos and numerous melodic fills and riff. Once you've mastered that try Deep Purple's "Child In Time" from their Made In Japan album. The speed-of-heat solo is the epitome of neuro-visceral spontaneity.

Thank you Arjay and BMW-KTW. It has been a long time since I have listened to Pink Floyd, even though they have been among my favorites so I'll give comfortably numb another listen. It is amazing how much time I've been taking listening to music for what the guitar is doing. I never did that before. It's an amazing journey I'm on.

By the way I'm also rather enjoying the Derek and the Dominoes.

Thank you so much everyone!

This track has a nice slow tempo and features some sweet string bends:

Hey Dee, you could try some Boston. A couple of their songs that come to mind are (A Man I'll Never Be), and (Hitch A Ride).

Their songs have a lot of double stops, and harmony which sounds like what you're looking for. Some of them also have a nice, slow recital sound.

Good luck, and rock on, Gary.

+1 to Hitch A Ride. Nice phrasing, not too fast and another nice example of bending strings.

Thanks Arjay.
Now you've gone and done it.

Sweet child in time
You'll see the line
The line that's drawn between
Mmmmmm, the good and bad.

I'm going to be silently screaming those ahh-ahh-ahhs in my mind for days now.

More international posting issues.
No idea what you posted.
Just a big white square where (presumably) a video should be.
Brad's team still has some bugs to iron out.

Hi again! Well I am definitely overloading myself and I am sure that I will settle down in another month or two!!! Before I posed this question, I had an acoustic guitar and had bought the following music to play now and later (some I knew would be too advanced):
Adele Skyfall (because it's my vocal range and I love james bond music)
I can mostly play the chords in this one already
BonJovi songbook (lots of variety but thought maybe I'd someday play wanted dead or alive)
Ozzy songbook (big fan of Mr. Crowley)

I was itching for a solid body electric and when it was obvious it was about time I bought one I got the Tele. After this thread has started I've ordered the Derek and the Dominoes songbook and a Pink Floyd songbook. I'll check out the Boston too. But I think you guys can tell I like your suggestions!!
