I haven't received the amp yet but plan to play it at home mostly at bedroom levels. I dont want to crank it up and disturb my wife, but I do want the full tone and sound of the tubes. Do I need an attenuator for a 12 Watt amp?

Even one watt amps are LOUD, so probably yes. But you just have to wait and hear.

If you need an attenuator, take time to choose the right one. And of course, there is the doctrine that "full tone and sound of the tubes" equals sufficient volume...

I got a 5 watt Champ thinking I could crank it up...... nope, not in my neighborhood.

I have resorted to the warehouse at work after hours.

Most speakers will produce 85-105 DB with 1 watt, one foot away.

+1!!!

Decades ago my Dual Showman took a dump as friends were en route to my place for a jam. In desperation, I plugged my '66 Vibro Champ into the Showman's 2 x 15 cab and was outright amazed at both the tone and available volume from that little 6-watt work-around. Even competing with a big Sunn bass rig and a Supro Thunderbolt, the VC held its own.

Thanks for all the replies folks. Under advisement I have purchased a Weber Mini 50Watt attenuator. I have a blues Jr, 30 Watt amp. I am going to try it conservatively on this one before I get my Fender Custom deluxe some time in the middle of this month. I will report my results here. Do I need to get some good speaker cables to hook up to this attenuator?

All cables you use should be good - saving very few $€£ is just not worth the trouble a cheap cheesy cable brings.

On the b-part of the question:

HOW DO I HOOK IT UP?
COMBO AMP: When using an attenuator with a combo amp, place the unit between the amp's speaker out and the speaker itself. Most combo amps have internal speakers that can be unplugged from the amp chassis using a 1/4" phone plug. UNPLUG the speaker from the amp. Run a short speaker cable from the output of the amp to the INPUT of the attenuator. You may then plug the speaker directly into the SPEAKER OUTPUT (not "Line Out") of the attenuator, or use a male-to-female extension cable if the speaker's wire won't reach. You should use speaker cable only, and short cables work best to prevent signal loss.
