I have a pretty old violin which I acquired through an inheritance.
It needed a lot of TLC before it could be played.
I had never worked on a violin before so it was a welcome learning experience for me.
I took my time and did good work and I am very proud of the end result.

After having restored the instrument to excellent condition I made the most interesting discovery.
I learned I am extraordinarily wonderful at making truly God-awful noises with it.

That's what happens when you inherit wealth.

Yes indeed, a skill I share with you, through a 100 watt Marshall Amp, much to the annoyance of my missus, and the entire street !

My violin has not been played in a number of years.
I tried for a couple of months after I finished fixing it up but gave up after making virtually zero progress in that time.
It now hangs on the wall in my living room as a decorative conversation starter.
The only thing that ever touches it is the Swiffer once a week.

Love the look of them, love the sound of them, but I cannot play them at all. I need something with frets on it. :)

I dropped the instrument in high-school. It's the Devil's own instrument...and should not be allowed out of Georgia. :D

But there is something about it that is pleasing. Especially one that has been played every day for a century or so.

Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown knew a thing or two about the violin and the viola.

Charlie Daniels and Jeff Cook of Alabama sure squeeze some pleasing melodies from a fiddle.

I'm a newbie to the Tele, but I've been playing various non electric violins for 20 years. I don't know what advice to give on the electric aspect of a violin but might be somewhat helpful on other aspects. One of of the first things I learned was how to 'bow' properly. The back and forth motion is from the elbow only and you change strings with the shoulder (more or less). the vibrato part of violin is well... the holy grail that I seek :) or should I say a good vibrato is. if I can help, I will just ask and I could try.

best,

dee

I played the violin as a kid. These days, I only play the fiddle.
Which is not the same thing, despite the similar looks. A fiddle has a much flatter bridge, for one thing, and the sound bar tends to be in a different position. Some have five strings instead of four, or drone strings under the fingerboard. Many lack a chin rest, because you hold it against your shoulder (or in some cases chest).
And then there are fiddles that definitely don't look like violins, like this one (which I never bring to jams):

I was thinking of getting an electric one, but they all seem to be made for violin playing and not fiddling.
What kind of music are you going to play?

Wow there arth1 that is beautiful, I can understand not going to jams with that, I don't think I would let it out of the house. I own a violin, but I would not call myself a player, I can make a lot of noise with it though.

Thanks! Bought with my first few paychecks when I was young (in the days of Charlemagne).
I'm not a great fiddler, but it's nice to play a jig every now and then on my cheaper fiddle[*], or just add some color. If there are another (and thus better) player, I'd rather play guitar, tin flute, blues harp or an old piano if there is one around.

[*]: I think I paid $200 for it at Guitar Center of all places, and another $100 to fix it up. The only way you can tell this one's useful as a fiddle is because the fretboard has a bigger radius than most violins. Image from before gut/silver strings, ebony tail piece to replace the plastic crap someone had put on it, and a better cut bridge:

Next purchase may be an electric, if I can find one that works for my playing style - irish/scottish/appalachian.

It feels good to play multiple instruments. I know I'll never be a master on any of them, but as long as I can do well enough that no-one leaves, some tap their feet or hit the floor, good times are had - and ultimately, that's what it's about, right?

So pick up that violin, even if you don't feel you're good at it now. I used to have to look twice to make sure I hadn't picked up and tried to bow a cat.

some beautiful violins/fiddles in this thread!

I'm partial to these skull carved violins, not for playing they are strictly for show.
