Hey guys, after some online research, I think I might have to re-teach myself guitar.........LEFT HANDED!!!. When I first started learning guitar, I learned right handed because those were the guitars I had access to, despite being left handed. I've been playing guitar for a good 4-5 years now and I think I've gotten fairly decent at it. However, for the past few months I've been getting in a rut with my picking speed. I've never been able to play faster reliably than eighth notes at 220. I read that your dominant hand should be your picking hand which makes sense. I also read that some people have done the same thing as me and a result, never get past a certain skill level. So, whadya think? Should I make the switch? Or would it not be worth it since I already have so much time invested?

Go Left Young Man! Like you I started out righty (in 1970) and once I found out Fender actually made felt handed instruments for mere mortals (and not just Paul McCartney) I ordered a lefty Precision in 1975. It arrived in 1976. Now I play better than ever!

Sorry I'm late to the party on this thread.

I also switched to left-handed playing after several years of playing right-handed. I had experienced more-or-less the same problem you are having now. Fretting hand was fine, but I had a very hard time doing anything more than simple strumming with my picking hand.

It probably took about six months or so to get up-to-speed, but I could tell from the very beginning that I was moving in the "right" direction.

I think it makes sense to play the way that is most comfortable in order to reach your full-potential as a musician. I recognize that many lefties learn to play right-handed and for them it works just fine. In my case, though, switching orientation probably prevented me from giving up on the instrument altogether in frustration.

I once had a student
who knew, he knew anything.

So he switched from left to right,
or vice versa, I do not recall.

He became a doctor of medicine
and took his father's business

May he live happily,
and may I never fall into his hands
when in need

He never payed my tuition anyway
and I was too proud to ask
