I'm thinking about getting an EVH 5150 2x12 combo but would it be better to get a high end Fender and add a killer distortion box instead? I know Fender is famous for their clean channel but I want an awesome distorted sound as well. I play everything...from pop to fusion to blues to rock to metal. So what rig would you go with if you want it ALL? All I ask is that it is under $2000, weight isn't an issue. If you like the Fender option (btw I'm leaning towards the Vibrolux as far as Fenders go) what distortion pedal would you choose? I've been using a cheap peavy for sometime and now it's time to upgrade BIGTIME!!! Thanks for any and all advice.

A good distorsion box is alway better to any in board distortion effect. I'll go for a good amp and good distortion box apart.

Wow, people don't seem to want to help me out with this. Yeah, I know I should go try them out but it's a major hassle for me. So I appreciate your reply. Is there a distortion box that you like best? Also, from what I've read with the EVH you don't need a distortion box as it has plenty in board. Have you ever plugged into an EVH combo? The guy at Sweetwater is telling me to go with the EVH instead of the other option I was thinking of (Fender + pedal). When I asked him about the EVH clean channel all he really said is they had improved it and it was close to a Fender. Thanks for the reply!

Nothing can make a good guitar sound great or a great guitar sound superb like a tube-driven Fender amp......

From the 6-watt Vibro Champ to the 135-watt ultra-linear Twin Reverb, they remain the industry standard IMNSHO.

I usually prefer a clean sound and not much distortion. My favorite amp is the Fender '65 Twin Reverb and you could add a pedal if you like. This was said before so I am just agreeing it. :)

Essentially, your question is "which of these two amps would be best for me", and answering that is an impossible task.
Of those two, I'd absolutely pick Vibrolux every time - but that tells nothing about you.

Still, it's the only way to be sure.

In general, an amp with a lot of built-ins can limit the player to those sounds more than a simple amp plus different effects when one needs it.

Find a good and right amp worth the hassle .

Arjay's impressive amp collection always gets 'em going!
LOL

And with good reason.

Back to the OP ...
What seems to be popular today is to do exactly what you've said and play a clean to clean-ish amp and use fx for dirt.
You're going to want at least two dirt pedals.
One that falls into the Overdrive category and one that is Distortion.
Then there is Fuzz, which is different yet.
Within each of those three basic types there are hundreds of flavours.
It might serve you well to take some time and make a few decisions about what kinds of sound(s) you want.

I've had that up for days.
Been wondering why nobody caught it yet.
Glad you get a chuckle out of it.
I'm quite enjoying it myself.
