I am working on a repair on a Fender Telecaster made in Mexico. I wanted to know what type of clear coat Fender used. I want to use JB Kwikweld to repair a caved-in screw hole. The hole was right on the edge of the volume/tone and switch cavity, so I will also be re-enforcing the wall the epoxy. The cavity is painted/coated the same as the guitar body. Generally, JB suggests roughing up a wood surface to create a surface to which the product can bond. However, I would rather not mess with the paint job. Currently I am using Rustoleum clear gloss enamel on a test piece of wood to see if the product will adhere, but I can't guarantee this will provide the same bond as the clear coat on the Tele. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Matt A.

First, find out what finish is on the guitar. Polyurethane, polyester, nitro - all are possible, depending on the age and model of the guitar.

The products you mention aren't familiar to me, so just a couple of general notes to ponder:
Kwickweld page says it's grey - does that fit the situation, or would a clear epoxy be better?
And, depending on the damage, just your ordinary wood glue (TiteBond, SigBond type) might be better for the job. Sometimes it's best to fill the hole with a dowel, then redrill the pilot hole for the screw.
How big an area do you need to clear coat; spraying may be overkill if just a few drops of (lacquer, PU, poly, superglue...) would do.

Ok. The guitar is a Standard and is circa 2010 - I don't know what type of finishes were used (mostly this is my question). I am not overly concerned with the color of the epoxy as the repair is within the cavity. Most of the screw hole is solid - I would not consider using a dowel. I was hoping not to mess with the paint and epoxy directly to the clear coat. Last night I applied four coats of the Rustoleum clear gloss enamel to a piece of plywood and attached a bit of the epoxy to it. It provided a very strong bond. My guess is that the Fender clear coat will bond as well, but I'd like to know if anyone ever had a problem with a similar situation.

Hey Matt - I don't know about the finish but I've used a wooden toothpick to fix a stripped hole. Just put a toothpick in the hole and break it off flush with the top of the hole. Screw in the screw and it will be as tight as new. Very simple old trick that I learned in my carpenter days.

+1 on the toothpick, works every time and is not permanent like epoxy

A Standard MIM Stratocaster 2010 is PU finished. Some FSR's may be nitro, so be sure about this...

If this is only a "stripped screw hole fix", you don't need to worry about the finish. Mask the hole area with tape, then use that toothpick (/match/any small piece of wood) + glue trick. Or a modern alternative: apply a thin layer of rapid epoxy in the inside edges of the hole, let dry, repeat as many times as necessary - this seems to last longer than the old school way.

I never tried the rapid epoxy method method but it sounds like it will work very well. As far as the toothpick goes, I used that "trick" on a used Strat that I bought 7 years ago and it is still as tight as ever. Good luck with whatever method you choose.
