Hello,
I just started playing guitar, I picked up a great combo deal on a MIM Strat & Tele and I bought a used Mustang IV V2 amp, if I was looking to buy a good Tube amp new or used for $1000 or less what would be some good options?
Deluxe Reverb Reissue - Hot Rod Deluxe III - Blues Deluxe - Blues Jr. - Super Sonic?
Or are there better options out there?
Was thinking about trading in the Mustang IV V2 and putting some money with it to get a good tube amp.
Thank you
Michael

A used Deluxe Reverb re-issue manufactured before 2006.

It all depends on what kind of sound you are looking for. I'm a fan of both, the Hot Rod DeVille 410 & 210 and the Blues Jr.

Think you might mean the 212?
Definitely the better of the two configurations, in my opinion.

To the OP:
I seem to be seeing an increase in the number of SilverFace amps on the used market in my local area. Who knows? Maybe the same thing is happening in your area? The prices I'm seeing are temptingly reasonable. I saw a '74 SR for $CAN900. I already have a few amps in that general size category or I might have bitten on it. If a SFDR or SFPR comes up and similarly priced I don't know if I will be able to restrain myself.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Don't vacillate too long, Matt. Prices on vintage silverfaces are on the rise.

My 0,2 cents: If we're talking budget, I like the Blues Deluxe Reissue... Although it ain't nothing fancy, it gets the job done and I like the treble on it.

The Super Sonic 22 is good if you like built in distortion, but if you'd rather go with an all clean amp, I like the '68 Custom Vibrolux Reverb with an OCD pedal.

I like vintage, so I go with my Super 210 -- fairly crisp classic Fender-y sound (my opinion anyway). At 65 watts, more than loud enough for lounges, bars, etc. Also in the Fender world, I have a Champ SCXD that works well in small environments.

Straying outside Fender, I have an Ibanez TS30H (30W head) with a custom Jazz-voiced cabinet for lounge work. And when I want to go totally retro, I have an Ampeg Jet ... how I started out. My current Jet is the same year as my original which, unfortunately is long gone. They have a shrill (louder than you might think) kind of non-Fender sound. One other potential plus is a tube rectifier -- you can get that vintage tube sag if that's a sound you go for.

In full time playing days, I used a Bassman 50 head with the 2 X 12" cab. As a note, my band would not have been considered hard rock (or metal today). I used it in fairly large school gyms and clubs but then again, we weren't known for being very loud.

You can find any of these options for under $1,000 though only the Ibanez new right now. I realize that a lot of people don't like used gear and you should know a good tube tech before going that route. On the other hand, I find that used amps can have some great character that takes time and use to build.

I hear a lot of people say good things about Peavey classics but I've never tried one. Thoughts?

If Leo Fender had not perfected the guitar amplifier paradigm, Hartley Peavey's devices *might* be worthy of my consideration.

But he did so I don't.
