I've been playing the guitar for most of my life, but I'm just now getting into playing slide. It seems that that most difficult part of playing slide is getting a really good clean sound without eccess sound from other strings. Basically, how do I better control the sound?

This is what I've done thus far:
I'm using thicker strings, set the action higher and I put down the pick and started using my fingers.

What I know:
Dampening unwanted notes.

Questions:
1. What is the best ways to effectively dampen unwanted string noise?
2. Where's a good website to learn chords for open G?
3. When setting the intonation, should I set the intonation for stand ard tuning, or should I set the intonation for Open G tuning? (I'm using a Thinline Telecaster with a vintage 3 saddle bridge).

I love the way the Area T pickups sound in this guitar. Here's a video of an early attept at playing "Can't Be Satisfied." I'm since realized that I got some things wrong when learning the song and have made a few adjustments.

Here's a piece of music I came up with early on.

Some damping can be done with right hand technique, some left. I can imagine there are as many ways to play slide as there are slide players. I'm no expert at slide but I do my best. I don't use a full slide. I have a couple of "ring" slides, one glass and one brass. They are a short slide that spins on your finger so it fits somewhat like a ring allowing you to turn it away from the strings and still play fairly normally although even flipped around the slide can encumber finger movement. The short slide helped me. You may wish to try it.

To get the sound you will want some compression.
Maybe a little, maybe a lot but almost always at least some.
There are specific slide pedals out there.
Some not so good. Others quite good.

This one is generally considered the secret weapon of slide:

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Hey There

It all comes with lots of practice, definitely one of the more challenging guitar techniques.

Questions:
1. What is the best ways to effectively dampen unwanted string noise?
Use your fingers, not a pick. Duanne Allman and Elmore James pretty much wrote the book on this style, and guys like Derek and Warren, use the same technique. Work on a soft touch, try to nail the intonation (play a fretted note, then slide it and see if it sounds the same)

2. Where's a good website to learn chords for open G? Dunno this one, I mainly play standard tuning.

3. When setting the intonation, should I set the intonation for stand ard tuning, or should I set the intonation for Open G tuning? (I'm using a Thinline Telecaster with a vintage 3 saddle bridge) As long as its raised it should all work.

Check out a short clip I made here, the right hand (and intonation) is key

Thanks for both of your advice. I've got good news. 1. I'm doing much better at dampening unwanted noise and playing my notes more accurately. 2. I was watching a few live performances of Muddy Waters and I noticed that he plays a cross between slide and fingered notes. He also uses a capo to change the key of song. 3. I've been using a lighter touch and turning down the tone knob just a little bit to thicken up the sound. 4. Those knobs on the amp really work.

Thanks again

good stuff paris. I tried to play slide several times over the years and just ended up deciding I'm not a slide player.
