Hi I have a gdec3 fifteen and its pretty cool...i dont really need the music playback side of it..i got it cheap and have been messing with it and FUSE...very cool..the tweeds/blackfaces jazmaster/jangle/brit blues brit steel and modern crunch all sound very cool...the rest i dont care about amp wise....the effects are so so....i use the overdrive as a boost because i think the overdrive distortion isnt that great...delays are ok..reverbs..ok and modulation soso...i like the advanced amp tweaks..but like i said the whole song playback thing is not for me in tha amp.
My question is this......should i get the scx2? will it still have the amps i like in the gdec3 and more..better effects maybe?...No display but from what i gather you can tweek it in fuse and upload to the amp for your own tones..and you dont have to have any metal amp tones( not a metal guy..just blues and rock)...is it a good move to the scx2? what extra do you get with it vs the gdec3?..or should i get a gdec3 thirty as some say the tones sound better on the 30 because of the larger speaker and horn/tweeter thing?..thanx

You'll still get the amps you like with the X2. Basically, you get all the v1 Mustang models plus the "solid state" Jazzmaster clean. ( they aren't QUITE the same, but you get my drift.) They're arranged around a 16 position dial, and some amps- like the tweed deluxe have two settings: Clean and dirty/compressed.

Sounds like the ones you mentioned are:

Tweed Champ
Tweed Deluxe
Bassman
Deluxe reverb
Princeton
Twin Reverb
Super Sonic burn channel
Brit 60's (AC-30)
Brit 70's (Plexi)
Brit 80's (jcm 800)

plus, the 90's metal (dual rectifier)
metal 2000 (5150)
and the afore mentioned Jazzmaster.

PLUS a dedicated clean channel, that's modelled after the "blackface" sound.

The amp comes with an 8 ohm speaker out, or you can buy it as a head, if you'd prefer to play through a 12" speaker(s).

As for tonal differences, I couldn't say- I've never heard a G-dec. However, the x2 has a tube power section that makes a world of difference in the tone, compared to an all solid state amp. ( I also have a Mustang III)

On the amp, you get

reverb (spring, hall, and room)
Chorus (fast, slow and deep settings)
Tremolo
delay
vibratone
all have multiple settings. there are also combos, like reverb+delay. I like the sound of them, personally. As A Mustang user, I kinda miss the on amp tweakability of that platform. You only have fx select, and fx level plus tap tempo on the amp itself. You can access all the fx- inc the stomp box types- via Fuse. There IS something to be said for a nice, simple uncluttered control panel, though!

The tones are great, and it's easy to tweak to your taste. I pretty much quit using pedals etc with it and just play strait in. Dirt pedals really aren't needed, either crank one of the tweed models, or go for the SSBurn or one of the brit models! Rock/blues is really this amp's forte'.

Hope that helps!

The effects are global- they effect both channels. You cannot, however, save anything on channel 1.

Unlike a standard modeller, all the knobs on this amp are live. So, if you have any of the AMP's fx active and you change channels or voicings, those effects are still applied at whatever settings you were using. I have never used Fuse, so I can't say if that's true of fx from Fuse. Same goes for the vol, gain and eq. ( the clean channel and voicing channel do have separate vol and gain controls) Ie, if you're "pushing" a clean voice, and then switch to one of the rock or metal ones, you'd likely see a big jump in distortion/saturation.

It's easier to experience than it is to explain...

To sum up, the SC X2 is- and acts like- more of a traditional amp with added goodies, than a full on modelling amps like your G-Dec. Unless you hook it up to your computer, you'll have a lot less faffing about to do. It really is more of a plug and play amplifier.

Also, for live use, there is no footswitch option for toggling between voicings (presets).

Sounds like a fun week! While the X2's obviously sound great with fendery single coil guitars, they also sound fantastic with 'buckers and P90's. It LOVES my 50's tribute Gibson SG. My favorite tonal combo is a Gibson-y guitar into a Fender-y amp- esp a warm and tweedy sounding one.

I got my hands on one of the surf green X2's. Goes well with my surf green Jazzmaster, and the surf green Squier VM "surf" Strat.

The 3 30 sounded better for playback of the backing tracks because of the 10" and tweeter. The 4 button f/s was really nice and gave better overall control of the amp. The back panel had some very useful features also. I owned both the XD and the G-Dec3-30 at the same time for about a year. The XD was the amp I brought to jams and the G-Dec was for home practice and to play along with. I'm just thinking, if you can have both, they really do compliment one another.

A few years gone by and some amps later I'm set with a blonde X2 and a newly acquired (craigslist ) blonde XD. Sweet tones with an A/B Box stacked or in stereo with my boss ME-80.

ok the scx2 is a keeper....just the channel 1 alone is great but the other amps sound very good and in the future i may add a diff speaker...but now onto the gdec3 fifteen vs the thirty.....i have been comparing side by side..both sound good...the 30 has more bottom end and is thicker of course with a larger speaker and all....the 15 sounds good too..just different..but i really do not want to keep both the gdec3 15 and 30..that is just overkill to me....anyone else decide the 15 was "better" then the 30? gdec3????

or maybe just sell the gdec3 30 and the gdec3 15...keep the scx2 blondie and call it a day

Former G-DEC 3 Thirty owner, current SCX2 owner.

I thought the G-DEC 3 Thirty was a great practice amp and, in many ways, superior to the Mustang I and II that replaced the G-DEC line (not fair to compare a G-DEC to a Mustang III, IV or V as the G-DEC was never released in a "stage" wattage version.). However, it is just not capable of such tone as you get from the power tube driven SCX2. Now it is a shame that the Super Champ technology is not available in a 40 and 60 watt combo - but I imagine that releasing such a product would kill both the Mustang and Hot Rod lines of amps!

The G-DEC 3 Thirty shines in three regards - the "practice" features (jam loops etc,) the footswitch, and the ability to accept SD Cards. If those features are irrelevant to you, then a SCX2 would be a better choice. Much simpler to use too!
