I'm looking at buying either a Mustang III V2 or a Super Champ X2. I'm leaning towards the SC because it has tubes but I am hearing that it will not save as many of your own settings to the amp and will only work for some functions if hooked up to the computer. What's the real story on this?

You use Fuse to create either an amp and speaker sim or an effects chain sim. You can create as many of these as you want and store them on your computer.

On the amp side, you choose the sims that you want to use and upload them to the amp using Fuse. There is room on the amp for 16 amp/speaker sims and for 16 effects chain sims. ( Plus the channel one blackface tone )

In truth I regularly use maybe 4 or 5 amp/speaker sims and a handful of effects sims; mainly reverb, tremolo or vibrato. I do use some pedals in front of the amp for other stuff.

The way I have learned to look at it is that you are choosing from an array of classic amps. Whereas the Mustang and other all digital amps go for more of the Swiss Army Knife approach and give you an almost unlimited amount of combinations to choose from.

I have played both and see the advantages to each approach, but at the end of the day I just felt I was getting better tones out of the SC and that is what I want when I am playing.

Good luck,
-Harry

I own a SCX2 and a mustang 1 but, I do understand the musty 3. The Mustangs provide all of the opportunities a full DSP amp can provide. In terms of flexibility and power, in a SS amp, the Mustang 3 is an incredible amp. The SCX2 is more of a hybrid and not as flexible. I like it, it a a small personal amp that can be used in many situations if a PA is available. The line out of the SCX2 is amazing in reproducing what you hear of of the speaker. Changing the tubes affects the tone.

I think the mustangs are great amps but, they are different than tube amps. The SCX2 is a little of both and does neither tube amp or dsp amp in full. It is more of a true amp with options, some of which need to be adjusted in real time instead of saved presets. Both amps are great values in the short term. Long term remains to be seen.

My answer to this question was to get both!

I'm an old fart, and the idea of hooking a computer up to my amp is just foreign. Thus, I never have. I also vastly prefer physical controls to mouse clicks.

I got the x2 as I was looking for a tubey sounding amp. WITH options. As stated, you have 16 different voicings on channel 2- including all the v1 amp models, plus the solid state Jazzmaster clean. Some models have 2 voicings- clean and dirty/compressed. You also get a nice array of fx: delay, tremolo, reverb, chorus and vibratone, each with 2 or three options, There are also combo settings. You get level and tap tempo controls.

SC X2 is a good option for more of a strait up amp with options, for the plug n play guys. It sounds great, and can get pretty loud. Plus, it has a speaker out for hooking up to other speaker options.

Mustang III is a more comprehensive modeller. v2 gives you even more amp and fx options. It also has modern conveniences like an fx loop, XLR out, headphone jack, midrange control, and a master volume. The 12" speaker and larger cabinet also make a difference. There's a far steeper learning curve to get the most out of it, but when you do  . I found one of these on Craigs list literally 2 weeks after I bought the x2. The price was right, so it came home with me. This amp also sounds fantastic, and can shake the walls. It "does" quiet much more effectively than the X2.

Basically, either way you really can't lose.
