The XD has presets that cannot be modified, with the X2 you are able to tweek or rewrite the settings to your taste using the included FUSE software and a usb cable.

You can separately modify any of the amp/cabinet settings or any of the effects chain setups.

Then you store the custom amp settings to one of the 16 amp selections and/or store the new effects chain to one of the selections on the amp ( don't recall how many are there ).

Some say the voicings from the XD are better out of the box, personally I like the ones in the X2 and with a little work they are amazing.

Isn't the XD a 1x8, with less power? Anyhow, according to a Fender rep on a NAMM video, the X2 came about when they had to switch factories- the one that made the XD was getting out of the amp making business. At least that's the gist I caught.

I've heard two different stories inre the modelling on this amp:

1) The X2/Xd uses an older version of the modelling than the Mustangs do.

2) as per the same video referenced above, the new X2 was upgraded to the newer modelling when it switched factories, among other upgrades.

I own both an X2 and an MIII. These two amps sound very different, even when using the same model- ie say, Brit 70's on both. The X2 sounds a good deal better, imo. Whether this has to do with the difference between digi/solid state, and digi+ tube, I dunno. That's just what my ears tell me.

Both have their advantages and weak points.

I play strats. I used and cherished the XD for a number of years and thought I had found the perfect home and small gig amp. Then I tried an X2 and Fuse Software which allows you to tweak the sound with effects etc. The biggest bonus for me is the ability to turn down the "mids" on both the clean and voices channels. Now when I A/B the xd against the x2 I realise just how "honky" the xd is. I've seen posts about build quality and upgrading the stock speaker but I cannot fault either. One other bonus come to think of it is the facility to add a noise gate into high gain sounds. I'll give the x2 10 out of 10 and in hindsight the xd 8 out of 10 (I originally gave the xd 10). Well done Fender. Looking forward to to X3 but not yet I want my moneys worth out of the x2 before I have to fork out again - which of course I will !!

Well stated. The X2 is amazing with the stock speaker after tailoring the fuze to your guitar. I use a Gretsch, Telecasters, and a Les Paul. I tailor a voicing to each.
