last week I was up in Northern California, I took My SCX2 up there because it is lighter/smaller than the Hot Rod Deluxe. My niece Grace and her cohort Neem from the band Grace In The Woods http://www.reverbnation.com/graceinthewood were doing a concert in her Aunt's honor (my wife that is) So they arraigned a house party to play for us and of course about 50 other folks.

Anyways they wanted to rehearse before the show. We were staying in an outbuilding at the wife's sisters house, and I had my SCX2 out there along with a powered PA speaker, and I used it to do my daily rehearsal. So they asked if they could set up in that outbuilding, and of course I said OK. After lugging in a lot of gear, keys, foot pedal board, and other stuff he asked if he could use my amp instead of bringing in his Silver Face Vibrolux. So of course I said yes which is something I never do. I don't let anyone use my gear, but this time I did. So they started playing and pretty soon he turned it up a bunch, and I thought here goes my Lil Buddy Speaker, and he had this pedal board that put out some kind of synth sound and man did that thing growl with tons of bass and undertones. I figured well I will have to buy a new speaker after this, but I was not really satisfied with the Lil Buddy anyways.

To make a long story a little shorter, after coming back home, I noticed that the speaker was sounding much clearer, and "broken in" I never play the thing all that loud, and do not use any synth or whatever that effect was, so I don't put loud complex tones into it. I was at the verge of selling the whole rig truthfully and buying a Blues Junior with a hemp cone speaker. But now thanks to my nieces guitar playing cohort, I am again satisfied with the SCX2. It is not as tone full as my Hot Rod Deluxe but it does exactly what I want, give a good clean and overdrive sound with on board reverb. It is light, small, portable, guitar in one hand and amp in the other, 1 trip in, 1 trip out. The HRD would require 2 trips, and weighs a bit more......

I actually got a very nice compliment on my musical/entertainer ability from my niece grace's cohort Neem Wood of the Grace In The Woods Band. They wanted to perform for her Aunt Lynda and myself when we were up in Northern Ca, so they arraigned a little concert at a private home gathering up in Northern California. The next morning I was out in an out building practicing one of my sets and Neem came by and sat and listened and watched me do my schtick. After I was done my set he said "you are a good entertainer". He and Grace are a fully pro band in the process of several recording contracts, one of which they won in a battle of the bands in the Bay Area. So a compliment from them was pretty heartening.

Very cool having someone appreciate your work.

I have heard that breaking the hemp cones in is a long process best accomplished at volume. Your comments seem to confirm it once again.

I can't wait to get my 2x12 finished so I can begin the process.

It is especially nice to hear if from someone who is a peer. People who know what you are doing because they do the same thing, and then like what you do, is a real treat.

I never knew the Lil Buddy would take a bit of strain to break in the cone, but it seems reasonable in hindsight, because the hemp cone is a bunch stiffer than a paper cone. I was not liking the tone at all, and was thinking of trying the OEM speaker again. But Neem did the break in the work for me, and I am glad I did let him use my amp for the rehearsal. A little unexpected bonus......
