I purchased a new Super Champ X2 combo last week. I like it a lot, except I'm having a problem with a persistent whining sound. In the video I've posted here, I'm plugged in directly from my guitar to the amp- no pedals or other devices in the loop. This whine is present on both channels, though it is sometimes more or less present on different voice settings of channel 2.

Here's the video:

My questions are:
1. Is this normal? I'm very much hoping the answer is "No"!
2. What should I do to remedy this? Is it likely a bad tube or cracked solder joint, or something else with the amp?
3. Is it possible that my incoming AC power is "dirty"? My previous amp, a solid state Line 6 Spider III, didn't have any similar whining, aside from the typical 60hz hum.

Thanks in advance for your help!

No it is not normal to my Super Champ X2. Mine is almost dead quiet on the clean channel and pretty much so on the overdrive setting on channel 2, however it does generate some noise on the overdrive channel because of the settings I have set on my favorite voice 13 the Super Sonic model. However mine does not have that hum like yours does on that video.

You can take it back to where you purchased it and swap it out for another amp, or have an authorized Fender repair shop look at it. It is waranteed for 5 years as long as you don't change out the tubes. Or do other mods on the amp.

The question is whether or not it makes noise without plugging in. If no, then the noise is grounding interference, external to the amp. Meaning, your guitar, cable or electrical power is the problem. Mine will make that noise with single coil pickups, but not with humbucker pickups.

Rockerduck-
If I plug a cable into the input jack, I get that noise, regardless of whether I'm attached to a guitar or not. Unplug from the input on the amp, and I get no sound at all, I'm assuming it shuts the speaker off in that case.

I've tried combinations of other cables and guitars, none of which have proved noisy in other setups or with a different amp attached to the same outlet.

Does that scenario imply grounding interference? If so, do you have any ideas on how I could remedy the issue?

desertbluesman-
Thanks for your response- I'm glad to know my expectations aren't out of line

You are welcome amigo. I hope it turns out well for you. Did you try updating the firmware on the amp?

No the speak doesn't shut off. It means your amp is ok and quiet. Single coil guitars are noisy if that's what you are using.

Agreed. My P-90's can get pretty noisy if they're not busy sounding great. :D

Hi EStickland,

We will be happy to assist further. Thanks you for posting your video. The high-pitched noise that is present in the video, is not the expected behavior. We would recommend that you contact your dealer and have them replace your unit. Please contact us directly at tsl@fender.com if you need further assistance with your Fender® Super Champ™ X2.
