Up until the economic crash I owned a custom home building company and still have all my cabinet making tools. I am very adept at wood working and now have an urge to build a 2x12 cabinet for the X2. I really would appreciate feedback from the group on this plan.

I play a lot of different types of music, from chimey Rickenbacker powered folk, to glassy Fender based country, to humbucker driven R&R and blues. Not really doing any metal anymore.

I record as well as play out a bit so I am looking for versatility in this project. My thought is a vertical semi open back cabinet ( one speaker above the other ) with the top being slanted. I would run an AlNiCo based speaker in the top and something a bit dirtier on the bottom. That combo should give me a nice blend of sounds and I can close mike either speaker ( or both ) when recording depending what I am playing. I would also be able to switch to the 10" in the X2s cabinet for a more classic Fender amp tone.

The big question, which speakers? I would like to keep the cost < $150 per speaker if possible.

For those of you who have experimented with a lot of different speakers what would you do?

Thanks,
Harry

Eminence Cannabis Rex is my vote, probably under a hundred bucks each. I have also tried one of my EVM 12L speakers in a separate cab. The increase in volume over the stock 10" speaker was very evident. Still had that sparkle but much more efficient. However the price of the EV speakers is above the hundred fifty buck limit. I just put a 10" Eminence Lil Buddy in my X2 combo replacing the stock speaker and I am very pleased with the resulting tone.

I'm with DBM with the Rex. I am also a big fan of a ceramic and an alnico combo, so the Canis Major is your other speaker. They each have their magic and together something very special happens. I averaged out the price and it falls within your budget.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessor ... ar-speaker $189.99
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessor ... 0000000612 $94.99

Works out to 142.50 a speaker. Two hemp speakers is almost too cool.

If they made a Canis Major 15" I'd throw it into my Excelsior amp.

Thanks Gents,

This gives me some ideas! ModWiz, I like the idea of a pair of hemp cones and the price for the pair is right in the sweet spot for me.

I needed to order a new template for my dovetail joint rig, should be here in a week or so. I will start by making a full back for the cabinet and then experiment with carving it out until I get the top end I want.

Other thoughts are very much welcome as this is my first pass at this.

Best regards,
Harry

Coach56,
I found this page to be very informative when considering a replacement speaker for my SCX2 combo:
http://fenderguru.com/how-to-select-speakers
As per my limited budget, I ultimately decided on an Eminence Legend 1058, with which I'm very satisfied.
Good luck with the project, sir.
Please post photos upon completion!

Way cool page very interesting and the sound samples helped a lot.

I will be sure to update this thread as I progress. Right now I am torn between a stained piece of functional furnature or blond tolex / oxblood grill to match the X2

Here is my DIY cab with a Ragin' Cajun inside. And that's my vote!
You can compare it with the stock 12" from FM 65R on the same amp: SCX2

Well, once again I see no choices of Weber speakers here. If you're going for 2-12" speakers, you can't beat a 12F150 50W and a 12A125, 30W. If it's budget you're concerned with, PM me as I'm a Weber dealer and can easily help fit your budget. Seriously, let me know if I can help. If you've never tried their speakers, you owe yourself the chance.

I intend to put a Weber 15 in my Excelsior. Probably the 15F150. Fashioned after the Jensen C15N. I speaker used in (some?) Ampeg Rocket models. Supposedly sounded great with guitar or bass. Given my needs/wants this speaker would seem to be the right fit. There are a few other that are tempting, but they would be for guitar only.

15" ceramic Blue Dog for a Vox type of sound. 15A125-A for some authentic old school Chicago vibe.

Eminence has the off the shelf factor and free shipping from the online vendors as major selling points. They also make a good speaker. Weber, takes thing to another level. A very good level.

I see Weber rising. Eminence will probably succumb to the sociopaths who inhabit boardrooms. It seems inevitable in a big company. They all end up with parasites. Products start to suck, a little.

Great observation, MW. I'm still surprised at Weber being a lesser known brand. They do take it to the next level, very well indeed. Been a dealer for them for years so I'm biased, no pun intended!
Thanks, MW.

Are you familiar with the 15" speaker I am considering? The 15F150.

Yes. Have you heard their 12F150, 50W? Like that but in a 15".

I thought I would post some updates. First decision was to sink the baffle into the sides which will give me great stability and avoid any rattling
Image

Next decision was to do full dovetail joints ( do I get points for a Beatles reference )

Image

Here are the sides, top, and bottom all routed and ready to assemble

Image

And here is the finished box, so far not a nail or screw has been used, however I am now trying to decide if I should add internal bracing or not.

Image

I cheaped out and used 5 ply birch instead of 7 ply, the problem is that it is less stable and tends to chip a bit more. Since I plan to wrap this in tolex I can patch it up and no one will ever really know.

Image

I had been working with someone on speakers, but he has not gotten back to me yet on prices. He was recomending not to go with hemp cones as he really felt it would kill too much of the top end from my amp. He was suggesting a Jensen AlNiCo and a Celestion ceramic combo.

Thoughts?

More to come!
-Harry

Not sure why some of the pictures are on the side? ?

I definitely recommend hemp cone speakers, it does not kill the top end, it just mitigates the shrill part of the top end a little bit. If my Eminence Lil Buddy did not do that, I would have sent the amp back truthfully or put it up for sale. However the hemp cones do have a quality that takes some getting used to. I would you tube hemp cone speakers, and listen to the differences.

I put the Eminence 820H hemp cone speaker in my Bugera V5 and it sounds very good. I do have a weber signature 8" alnico I run with in a small hand made cab.

I am loving the tone of the hemp cones. Even new. They just keep getting sweeter.
