How similar are the Super Champ X2 and Mustang I? I have had the Mustang I for about a year now and I really like it. One complaint I have about the Mustang I is that sometimes effects change automatically. Also I miss tubes. I got to play a Super Champ X2 and overall I was really impressed. Should I give it a go or should I wait? NAMM is coming up and I might miss out and something new.

I don't think there's a lot between them. Certainly not given the cost difference. Every store dude reckoned it was a far better amp, but at $300+ more, they would say that.

The SC is simpler to use, and sounds nice. If you like it and think the difference is worth it, then it is.

Just keep in mind, there's no relation between 20 solid state watts through an 8" closed back cab, and 15 tube watts in a 10" open back cab.

You'll get a big jump in volume from the tube power amp and the larger speaker. The open back makes it less directional, and spreads the sound around. Just keep that in mind for home use, if you like to push the amp hard.

Like Drubbing said, they are simpler to use. You can, however, make them just as tweakable with Fuse. I love mine, and feel the $350 US I spent was well worth it. It comes with a speaker out, as well so you can scale it up for small-med gigs with an extension cabinet.

And that's the thing; if you can get one for that price and you like it, it's worth it. Depending on where you live, they could be $600 retail, then the Mustang at less than $200 is a no brainer, as it was for me.

I own both of these amps and they cannot really be compared. The X2 sounds really good when you play it at low or loud levels. Better speakers make the loud sound better. The stock sounds superb at moderate and low volumes. Headphones are not an option.

The Musty l sounds like total $@!& when cranked, even moderately. However, it is sonic bliss in a pair of decent headphones ( I have a twenty dollar sony model). It records very well and is easy to use for recording. I am glad that I have both of these amps. Choosing one over the other is a matter of what it will be used for. The Musty l costs less than many effects pedals. Not owning one is almost a mistake. It is not a real amp in any sense of the word, IMO. It is a great amp for what it does well though.

The X2 is one of the best values on the market. I am saving up for a serious tube amp. I have my eyes on a handful that range from around 1700.00 to 2500.00. None of them are fenders. However, most are Fender clones. If I had Bluesky's technical ability, I could save myself some money and have fun. So far, saving up seems like the more realistic route.

Owning the X2 is a pleasure on many levels. My Bugera V5 is a gas too. Especially with the added Weber signature 8'' alnico singing along with the very bottomy/dark stock Bug speaker. The combo is amazing in its tonal spectrum.

The line out on the X2 has given me some excellent recordings. Really happy with this amp.

That depends on where the market is.

I see your point. My bad. Got caught in an Amero-centric view.

Well Drubbs, since you live in the upside down part of the world, maybe you'll get lucky some day and those responsible for those stupid high markups will fall off! :P

That's nuts- why is the SC X2 $250 more in Aussie than it is here?? Our currency sucks here, there shouldn't be THAT much difference...

Import duties, shipping costs, plus the importer has to go through hoops to get the product there. Now if Fender had a factory there, well..............

This has been covered in other threads. Fender is the importer and distributor and gets free trade incentives from Aus. While their products aren't made here, it doesn't justify 100% mark up on most products, such as guitars.

I have the Mustang IV, to me they just have different sounds. As far as volume goes, my ears cant handle either turned up all the way. The loudest the MIV was at 5-6, I may have had the X2 close to full hooked up to a 4x12 cab, I can remember that being unbearable lol.
I've also played the MIV through the MV cab which sounds great.

I havent tweaked the MIV too much, there are only about 3 or four presets that I hang around. I've never had problems with stability (effect changing).

I got the X2 around Feb, though I havent tried Fuse on it yet. All of the tones are so good I run out of time to get to hookin it up. If I had to choose one I'd go with the X2.

I thought the internal speaker plugs into that ext speaker jack?
Can you run an internal speaker with an external speaker both at 8 ohms ?

As is, it's an either/ or proposition. You could probably use a splitter to do that. Or perhaps some sort of A/B/Y box. As for the ohm question, dunno- I'm NOT at all clear on impedence issues...

Doing it this way ( plugging the combo's speaker into the speaker out) makes for a nice simple, reliable system. There's no internal switch to fail, and no extra wiring.

I really like the way they designed the speaker input jack on the X2 as well.

I've hooked the X2 up to an external 4x12 and i've done the same with my mustang iv. I didnt notice as much of a difference going to the 4x12 on the IV though.

To me the clean sound on the X2 is crystal clean. You might be able to get the same on the IV but I havent. I like presets 3 and 73 the most on the IV, which sound kinda clean, but there is always a little soft fuzz/static. You don't notice it so much unless you go from playing the IV back to the X2.

Off topic but I think my next choice will be the Band Master.
