With an overdrive or fuzz hooked up to it on channel 1, I can hear what sounds like a tube rattling. Kind of a glassy, vibrating, pinging sound. Is that the speaker causing the tube rattle, or something else, like a bad tube? Seems to happen on certain notes more than others. Appreciate any thoughts.

I ended up getting some new tubes from Fender (great customer service, by the way) and tried those, but had the same issue with any amount of overdrive and higher volumes in general on channel one or two. If I held the suspect tubes with a towel, they wouldn't rattle. So not sure what how to solve that, other than to keep trying more tubes. Just think combos are more prone to this issue, so ended up returning the amp. Will try the X2 head instead with a separate cabinet, hopefully, that will keep tubes from rattling.

Regards.

I had the rattle also, I just kept using it a little bit then turning it off then back on, it finally stopped rattling, as if the tube needed to be heat cycled.

My Super Champ X2 has never exhibited tube rattle. However, I'm not sure if it can be prevented. I have a Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister 18 Head. I had intended to use it while having it sit on top of my entry level Marshall "Carbon" 4x12. However, I came across the rattle. At the time (last fall), I was completely new to tube amps. I thought it was the speakers at first. After a lot of research and testing i realized I could just put the head somewhere else, basically anywhere but on the cab, and everything sounded perfect.

My X2 combo is starting to rattle a little bit. I guess it is time for some JJ anti rattle power tubes and the Eurotubes tube rings. That is how I fixed my Hot Rod Deluxe from rattling and it plays as clean as a whistle.

However the stock tubes have to get a much worse rattle than the little it is rattling now.

All combos are prone to having the tubes rattle due to speaker vibrations. Had a Marshall Class 5 with the same issue. I tried 2 and 3 tube dampers on my X2 combo stock tubes and they didn't help at all. Only holding the tube stopped the rattling, and it's kind of hard to play while doing that as you can imagine. Going to get a head and separate cab this time. And like the previous post said, if it rattles on top of the cab, I will set it along side of it.

On my Hot Rod Deluxe the Eurotubes anti rattle rings seem to work very well in combination with the JJ anti rattle power tubes (so far that is). They are very different than the ones you find elsewhere.

A separate head and cab is also a great option. I was torn between the two options myself as I have 2 1-12 cabs loaded with EVM 12L speakers. I opted for the combo as it suited a grab and go one piece amp.

For years I played the HRD through one or the other of those cabs. The rattle in the tubes did not happen with that option, but later on I thought to try the Eurotubes anti rattle rings and anti rattle JJ tubes, and so far knock wood everything is rattle free.

Thanks, interesting. So JJ sells tubes labeled and marketed as 'anti-rattle'? Where did you get them from, (Eurotubes?) and what do they run price wise?

My HRD rattled and I changed the power tubes and it quit. Changed one v3 tube also, Gonna change other two, just so there all new and matching. Do those silicone rings really help much? Tom. :)

The anti rattle tubes are sold @ http://www.eurotubes.com/ I cannot remember the price but they were probably a few bucks more each. The anti rattle rings are massive compared to the others I have seen on the market. So far there are no rattles at all in the HRD. I think you have to call them up to find out the particulars. As the website may or may not have info regarding the anti rattle power tubes.

By the way I did buy some anti rattle tubes one time before from Eurotubes but sure enough they rattled after some use, but coupled with the rings the new ones do not rattle (so far)

It really depends on how bad the rattle is. With my Marshall Class 5, I finally got the power tube to be quiet for the most part with two dampers. Unfortunately, no such luck with the X2. The rattle was as loud as the note being played, but it only happened on certain E notes, some kind of strange sympathy vibration.
