Hi All, this is my first posting.

I recently bought a "used" SCX2 head and matching SC 1x12 cab and, so far, am enjoying it (but I haven’t explored the Fuse capabilities yet). However, I’ve noticed that whenever I aggressively pick the “D” note on the 3rd string (7th fret) and 4th string (12th fret) I can hear a very noticeable tonal distortion of the D note.

I’ve plugged the SCX2 into 3 different outlets, each on a different circuit, but I get the same distorted sound when I aggressively pick the D note on these 2 strings.

I’ve tried using my different axes, American Standard Strat, Gibson LP Traditional, Gibson ES137 and Gretsch G6120DSW and get the same result with all of them. I’ve also tried using 3 different patch cords, all with the same result.

The distortion occurs on both, channels 1 & 2 but is specific to the “D” on the 3rd & 4th strings only. Aggressively picking any other note on these two strings doesn’t result in any distortion and all notes on strings 1, 2, 5 & 6 are free of any distortion.

I know the guy that I bought the SCX2 from and he takes good care of his guitars and gear and he doesn’t gig so I’m ruling out amp abuse.

Does anyone have any thoughts, ideas as to what’s causing this? IMHO I’m thinking that a tube is acting up but don’t know for sure, and if so which one it might be??

Thanks

It is only an idea but speaker or speaker/cabinet resonance issue seems a possibility. So, plugging your amp head into another speaker cabinet would help see if this is the issue. It is not at all out of the realm of possibility.

I hooked up my SCx2 head to an Excelsior 1x15", 8 ohm, speaker and got the same tonal distortion, so I can now rule out the SC 1x12 Cab as the culprit. It must be one of the tubes that's causing the problem. If anyone has any ideas about which tube(s) might be causing the problem, I'd appreciate hearing from you. I know nothing about the tubes so I'm all ears. Thanks!

you might try removing each tube and then reinstalling them, making sure they are in there nice and snug. if you want to try replacing them, you can start with the small preamp one first, as you wouldn't have to worry about a rebias.

since you bought this used, it might be worthwhile to have a tech replace all the tubes and do a bias.

maybe someone with more expertise has some suggestions.
good luck!
