I bought this amp about a year ago. I am a fan of the FUSE software and the versatility that it gives me. The Super Champ has a clean channel which is full valve and then utilises 16 "voiced" channels which is more of a hybrid system. the 16 preloaded voicing are for the most part pretty good but ultimately its the clean channel that is vintage Fender. When i bought it i sat for a couple of hours playing thru this and a blues junior and decided on the X2 from a versatility point of view. I have not fully tweakedall the voiced channels as yet buts it very cool to hook it up to my laptop and much about ...there is not much one cant do with this amp and its portability and ability makes it a keeper. With that in mind i decided to mod it a bit and decided on the following:

1. cover the side panels with red covering , inspiration from the FSR blues juniors recently launched.
2. REplace the stock valves with some top quality
3. and funally (pun, thus far) replace the stock speaker with a Jensen electric lightning - not done this yet , hope to receive speaker next week)

So far so good , the new valves certainly increase the clarity somewhat (or it it my imagination :D )

First pic , the inspiration

Then my super champ:

Amp is a keeper so have no problem spending money on it as i please.

Cheers

Everything you have said about the SCX2 is how I feel. A definite keeper. Greatvalue as well. I bought mine in surf green and love the color. So far a tung-sol 12ax7 and an Eminence Red Fang alnico 10" speaker have made this amp even better. It sounds so much bigger than it looks and that alnico compression and chime is all there. At some point I will try other power tubes. Still have the stock GT's in there.

Nice look with your mod. A definite improvement over the typical black.

The OP is dang near word for word how I ended up with my SC X2. The only thing missing was my take on the volume pots. The BJ's have that "wonderful" Fender quirk of going from a whisper to a roar with the tiniest twist of the volume. The SC X2 got it right- with a gradual taper to the pot. Very important to us home players with neighbors!!

The Surf Green tolex was very attractive, too. Now I want a Strat in the same color!

Soundwise, I continue to find impressive tones in there- as often as not, totally by accident. The "Black face" clean channel and a Strat is a match made in heaven! ( a Tele sounds good thru it, as well)

New Jensen electric lighting speaker finally installed. at first I was not completely bowled over by it but then hooked it up to my laptop and played around with the software....oh wow!!! still got to break in but damn the tone I am getting now is way way better that any of the blues juniors I played... still a lot of tweaking to do on the voiced channels though...

love this SC2 .....what a great amp

Likewise...

I rarely hook either of mine up to FUSE but when I do it's usually to fiddle with the reverb. I stayed up late last night messing with both of them. I also messed with upping the mids on both my combo and head versions. I'm happy with that tweak but I think I need to readjust the reverb. I'm not used to having so much control over it and am not always sure what I'm doing. On both amps I have one reverb setting on the '63, one on the '65, and one on the '65 with a touch of Vibroverb.

I'm continually amazed at how great they sound... I love the combo through the 10" speaker and my head/custom cab combo with the 12" Cannabis Rex sounds fantastic too, though they are as different as night and day. I know a lot of folks have had great success changing the speakers out but I'm content with the stock one for now. I just got new speakers for my TRRI so I need to speand some time breaking those in before I get to messin' with anymore new speakers. Cheers fellas, I always enjoy checking in. Peace. 8)

here's a pic of my super champ in action last week. now i know you rockers are gonna think this the worst form of hell...but...those old folks really appreciate looking at something other than a tv or a wall! there were around 50 people in that room...beds, wheel chairs, oxygen machines, and carpeting... and that little champ was plenty loud!

the other amp is a jmf spectra 112...ss 15 watts with a 10 inch speaker and real spring reverb...i use that for vocals...a wacky setup for sure but it works!

i can't believe how good the scx2 sounds with my archtop. lately i've been using ch. one, with the reverb/delay combo setting at between 2 and 3. fantastic!

cheers

As much as a rocker as I have been and still am, entertaining people with the right music is why I play to begin with. Aside from personal enjoyment, that is.

I like and use the same reverb/delay combo on the same level setting. 2-3. Adds just the right amount of atmosphere and makes the amp into an ambience creator. The clean setting is tube heaven with the effects adding just the right touch. Love the vibratone setting also. Set just right, it is my go to effect when others might opt for chorus, flanger or phase. With a touch of large hall reverb sometimes. Just a touch though.

I too like my SCX2, it is a keeper for the bucks, but I think the clean channel also has a hybrid system there is some modeling in it somewhere. The tubes are for preamp and power amp and I think the voicing is in software/ modeling even the clean channel.

I just use the spring reverb model on about 1 and a half to two, no delay, no other effects. I am from the less is more school of effecting.

yes, ch. one is a model. but...the trick is to get the volume knob up to around 6 or 7 , then use your guitar's volume and tone. regardless of the sound source, the output tubes, once they're cooking, can really add a nice warm tone. to my ears anyway. ymmv!

cheers!

I am like JamGuy I like the stock speaker in my combo a lot. Sounds so good. As soon as I will be getting a head version and running it thru a cab with a either a Eminence Red White Blue or a Cannabis Rex. Can't wait!

love'n both the red and that killer surf green color. I had to have the blond and ox blood combo brings back memories.

Right now I really love the tweed setting and the bassman setting. I do have a Route 66 pedal coming, that should be fun on the clean channel.

The red covering really looks handsome on that amp! Nice!

Agreed, on the Bassman and Tweed settings. I love those, too- AND the Vox one as well.

I tend to use the clean channel the most. I'll push it hard when I can, to get that sweet 6v6 warmth. When that's not an option, I break out my OCD. Or I'll just use it clean.
