Hello,
I'd like to buy a new Fender Super Champ X2.
But I dont know if SCX2 head + Super Champ SC112 box playing better than SCX2 combo?

A friend of mine have a SCX2 combo, said me its playing similar like Blues JR III, which had previously, but he changed the amplifier and tubes just after he bought it, so its hard to make a comparision with original amplifier and tubes.

So, is it big difference or any difference in sound quality between combo vs. head + box?

Thanks in advance

I decided on the combo as I wanted something that was easy to play out with. The fact that the combo uses a normal jack for the speaker means I can still plug any 8 ohm cabinet in should I want to change things up later down the road.

Plus I wanted the blond / oxblood combo and am really happy with how it looks.

Regards, Harry

Did you compare it with Blues Jr?
Did you compare it with SCX2 head with box, also?
If yes, were there any hearing differences?

I bought the head because I had a speaker cab... The difference in sound will be in the kind of speakers in the cab...

I did not look at the Blues Jr but I did compare the stack vs the combo. I didn't notice a huge difference, but the 12" speaker seemed to have a little more depth or punch to the tone, the combo seemed to have more sparkle on the clean settings with a Strat. Keep in mind this was in GC with some guy POUNDING away on a hugely distorted stack, lol.

For the time being the combo meets my needs perfectly.

I have both a BJr and the X2. The Blues Jr. I am going to sell, the X2 sounds so much better in my opinion. I have the combo and will sell the BJ and get a head version of the X2.

I demo'd both the SC and the Bjr side by side, and ended up getting the Champ. However, my reason was mainly volume- to get the best sounds out of the Blues JR, I had to push it way harder than I'd ever be able to use at home. It is my favorite amp to use at the shop to demo guitars and pedals.

As someone who likes his modellers, the tonal variety from the SC was also a real deal maker. It got the sounds I'd been wanting, and I didn't have to get myself evicted to get them. Where's the downside??

I rarely use any of the fx other than the reverb, so that wasn't a big factor. I have pedals for that.

To answer the original question:

The combo has a speaker out- the internal speaker is actually plugged into it. Unless you just prefer a head/cab, you could actually get more versatility from the combo. Use the combo as is for home practice or jams. Add a cab for gigs! It also has a line out jack.

The 10" speaker in the combo is plenty loud enough for practice or small gigs. There are also some nice aftermarket 10's out there, if you're into swapping. Plus, it's pretty compact, and not that heavy. Making it more convenient to move around.

I have the combo and put an Eminence Red Fang alnico in it. Words alone cannot describe how good and big this combination sounds. I am sometimes amazed looking at this little amp and the sound that comes out of it. The alnico really makes the 60's Vox amp mods sound like the actual amp. I still want to get into fuse and see what happens if I take the stock cab setting out and just let the RF do the work. I'll be trying that today.

I love my SCX2. All my guitars sounds great through it. Tele Amer. Standard, Ibanez Artcore, MP Jaguar and Les Paul.

Last night I completed the installation of the Clapton mid boost into my American Strat Plus with gold lace sensors. I do believe my SCX2 reach nirvana ( pg rated comment ).

The strat sounded good thru the SCX2, but now with the additional umph that I get out of the boost circuit the clean channel is about as happy as pie. My wife is out of town for the week so I was able to get some serious volume going and the tones were just outstanding.

Just thought I'd share, 8)

If you own aspeaker (cabinet) get a Head! Otherwise, try the combo. You might add later different speakers or cabs.
I have a Ragin Cajun, so bought the head only.
Also have a Frontman 65R, so can use that speaker for mellow sounds (connected directly to X2 out, or through Loop In if needing more power).

I have the combo, I bought the combo for a grab and go amp one trip to the car and one trip to the jam, amp in one hand guitar in the other. I have not been sorry that I made that decision. I also have some EVM12L's in 1-12 speaker cabinets, and I actually like the combo model better, the first day I plugged in the 1-12 cab and the tone was nice but not a lot better. For portability I bought the combo.........

Like the Desertbluesman says, I like the combo for my needs. Set it up with a speaker that works for you and you have this great little amp that makes sounds that are tailored to what one likes.

I like that cab you have that RC in GuitarMikey. Nice piece of woodworking. The RC is a quality speaker. Three different SCX2 owners, each with their own unique voice. It's a sweet thought.
