Hey all - need a bit of help here so I don't do any damage.

I am in the process of putting together a pre-amp -> power amp -> 2x12 cab rig.

Currently running a SuperChamp X2. I upgraded the speaker to a JBL K-110 and replaced the stock tubes with a Vintage NOS RCA 12AX7A and a matched pair of JJ 6V6S. I primarily use channel 1 with my outboard effects and the amp is sounding pretty good.

I have my sights set on a pre-amp. I was going to use the line-out from the SuperChamp to my power amp as a primitive pre-amp until funding allows for a proper pre. And of course set-up a dummy load for the speaker so as to not damage the output transformer.

So here is my issue. My power amp is (maybe was) a McIntosh MC2100. I was sold a bunk amp by a lousy ebayer so I am now involved in a paypal dispute so I am currently minus an amp designed to support anywhere from a 2ohm to a 16ohm load.

I also had a 2x12 JBL K-120 cab built. This one is from a friend so no worries - it has just been finished and will be shipped in the next day or two. It is currently wired in parallel for 4 ohm operation but of course can easily be rewired in series for 16ohm operation.

This cab is going to arrive in a few days. The SuperChamp is designed specifically for an 8ohm load. At this point when the cab arrives I just want to hook it up and give it a quick 10 minute run through to insure that UPS didn't damage it during shipping.

I realize I have a load mismatch. I spoke with Fender support today and they told me that under no circumstances should I hook up 16ohm load up to the SCX2 - it will fry the output transformer. However, the tech told me that I can safely run a 4ohm load from the SCX2 - it will just shorten the life of my tubes.

So I got home from work and began researching this whole thing. After a few hours of reading Fender Forums, speaker wiring guides and all kinds of things I have information telling me that a 4ohm load will fry the amp, a 4 ohm load is ok, a 16ohm load will fry the amp, and a 16 ohm load is ok.

I need a solid answer to this question. I just want to test the cab, not play it through the SCX2 for a month until this MC2100 debacle is resolved.

So please guys - what's the safest move here?

Thanks for reading and for any help that can be provided.

I've read on several forums that hooking up two 8 ohm speakers in paralell to an 8 ohm tube amp was fine.

I've done it with mine for about a week and didn't have any problems.

Hope this helps.
