I took my precious NOS preamp tubes and tried them in my Superchamp X2.

The results are amazing. The highs and mids are SOOOO much better. This is on channel one.

I can't justify using a Blackburn Mullard or telefunken ( which were both incredible) but an old 12x7 labeled Olympic, probably made by RCA,( it has the long grey plate) is excellent as a preamp tube.

It tamed all harshness and brittle high end.

I don't know what effect it will have on channel 2.

Is the preamp tube used for channel 2 ?

I may have to try some NOS RCA 6v6s next.

I am going to get a Champ with tubes.
Are you suggesting all Champs should change their Pre-Amp Tubes?
Just the Super Champ?
I am considering the Champ X2.
What tubes are you changing from and to?
Toppscore :)

I replaced the stock preamp tube , which was a Sovtek with the Groove Tube label, because I found the x2 was too harsh, brittle and the highs were overly sharp.

I like to use new Old stock (NOS) tubes from the 1950s and 1960s because they made them better.

Its a 12ax7, or ecc83( European made) tube for the preamp.

You can get a nos tube for $30 . Find a reputable place that sells unused tubes and tests them.

I have found new tubes that sound good but the old ones are always better.

I had my girl and a couple friends listen to my X2 with the stock tube and the NOS tube and they all chose the sound of the old tube.

So i am not just enamored of vintage tubes.

The preamp tube can be replaced without any biasing.......so buy a few if you can and experiment.

I like the 7025 tubes, they are a low noise version of a 12ax7 and work very well.

I can't justify using my expensive tubes in this amp , but spending $30 or $40 to make a good amp great is worth it everyday to me.

Man, I can ramble on talking about music gear.

Thanks, Snowman. Will do.
I have purchased some tubes, before.
Just got in a bunch of 7025 RCAs
Have some SovTec & JJ Power tubes.
But, just learning about the features, advantages.

After reading this thread I put a 7025 in today. Can't say I noticed a massive difference but I will be keeping it in!

Where did you find 7025's? I need a couple for my vintage '64 Bandmaster. Every tube in it is a different manufacturer except the old Sylvania 6L6's that were in it when I got it in the mid 80's

I thought the SCX2 had a negative something or another loop that allowed it to mask out the differences in tubes.

I picked up a NOS 12AX7 at an antique store for $2. I may give it a shot and see if it makes a difference. I hope not, because I like the way the amp sounds like it is.

I got a 7025 off ebay and a TAD Mullard clone from a specialist guitar shop near where I live. I have put the original back in for the time being though!!
