Hi - bought an X2 a few days ago, generally pleased with it, managed to get the Fuse software working no problem and can see endless hours of fun playing with the different amp models and effects through that.

But I do have a problem with hum, and hoping someone can help me diagnose the cause.

If the amp is turned on with nothing plugged into the input jack, there is no hum at all (you can hear a tiny hum in a quiet room, but really nothing).

If I plug in a guitar cable, (just the cable, no guitar attached) I get a hum, quite loud. This is on clean channel. If you turn the volume up, the hum gets louder, but it's quite loud even on setting 3/4. Switch to the preset channels and the hum is still there - some channels a bit better than others, but always there. I've tried a couple of old cables and a brand new Elixir cable today, all have the same problem (each cable has a slightly different hum "tone" but that's another topic :) )

If I plug a guitar into the end of the cable, the hum is still there. I've tried with a couple of guitars, one Squier Strat and one old Gibson "The SG". You can vary the hum a bit by playing with the guitar pickup selector, volume and tone controls, but it's still there and loud enough to be annoying.

I have moved the amp around the house e.g. tried it on the top floor and ground floor. It possibly seems to hum a bit quieter on the ground floor which is on a different electrical circuit in the house.

Any suggestions how to diagnose/troubleshoot further? Could it be the amp is faulty, or something wrong with my house electrical wiring?

Many thanks

Hi Mike Floorstand,

This is a bit difficult to try to diagnose without being in person with the amp. Is it possible for you to go to the retailer where you purchased the amp and compare to a second unit? If not, I can tell you that a moderate amount of hum is not unusual, particularly with higher gain Voices. It sounds like the amp is likely working correctly overall.

You also mention that you have tried connecting the amp in a second location (i.e. a different circuit breaker) in your house. I am wondering if taking the amp out of the house to connect, listen and compare might be helpful? Please let me know what you think. Thanks.

Mine doesn't make any noise at all. I'd exchange it for a new one.

Hi - many thanks for the replies, I will try a few things and report back.

I wonder, if I eliminate the amp, cable, guitar then the noise must be caused by something in my home environment - the wiring circuit or something "in the air". What sort of things would I look for there? I think I'd have to get an electrician, but not sure exactly what I'd ask him to look for!

Cheers

Mine made a lot of noise at first but it seems to have resolved itself and it isn't an issue much anymore.

Hi! I don't have any noise with the input cable but I have a different hum problem with the line out.

Please see my topic about using it with Yamaha audiogram 6. I would appreciate some help...

Thanks!

I started getting noise from a battery charger in the opposite end of the house through my Mustang Floor so I bought a rack mount Furman power conditioner and hooked my computer, mixer, SCX2, Mustang Floor, and stereo all through it. The difference is amazing in all aspects of the sound. Not just the amp but music from the computer as well.

I'll never be without a power conditioner ever again.
