I play at my church and currently use a HRD set at about 2 mic'd and a pedalboard. I love my tone but we have issues being in a smallish room with feedback and stage volume. We also use personal monitors (In Ear Monitors).
My questions are:
1. Does the direct out sound like a mic'd cab?
2. Does the channel 1 set clean with pedals sound like a "regular" tube amp?
3. Am I better off buying a smaller combo amp?
FWIW I wouldn't be using the modeled channels on stage but only at home.
Thanks all!

Why don't you use volume knob to play a lower volume with your HRD ? This must give you no more feedback.

Smaller tubes ( or solid state ) combo is not a warranty you'll have what you are looking for.

Just about feedback, lower amp don't warranty you'll have less db at output to give you no more feedback. Half watts output power is not half db.

Feedback is more of a problem with single ended 1/4" connectors. A mike with XLR balanced output has a hotter output, allowing you to lower the gain and eliminate feedback.
A lower gain amp will help with feedback more than a lower power amp.
You can lower the volume of any amo, but the fixed internal gain will always dictate its dynamic, or punchy, character.
A guitar makes a percussive note. The first few cycles are much louder than the decaying note.
The ratio of peak to decay stays constant and is controlled by the fixed gain of a tube amp,.regardless of volume settings. So the HRDX is a punchy amp regardless of volume and can be prone to feedback. You might try plugging the pedal board into the Power Amp Input for less gain
An old Fender Princeton or Deluxe Reverb had low gain, but the modern ones are much higher.
A good low gain choice may be a Bass practice amp. These are all low gain and still rather powerful. The low gain aspect means that it is easier on the ears and it sustains much better than a HRDX.
If you find one with a shape control or switch, they can be voiced nicely for guitar.
They can be upgraded with better chips for decent tone as well.

Why not put 12AT7 tube in V1 on HRD ?

This help to make HRD a low gain amp.

Yes, a 12AT7 will lower the gain. I prefer to tack a 10K resistor across the feedback resistor on the tube board.
It lowers hiss as well as gain. The presence control is more responsive.

+1

And for somebody who don't know electronics a 12AT7 could be a good second choice ?

Yes, a 12AT7 lowers the gain. Plugging into the #2 input also lowers it
