I know y'all are my Fender peeps... but I am wondering if anyone spent any time with the Vypyr VIP line and your honest appraisals as to how they were, especially stacked against the Mustang line.

What did you like or dislike? Just needing help with a purchase decision. Thanks in advance for your comments!

I have both the VIP-3 and the Mustang III. Sound wise, they are both really nice amps. Each does have it's pro and cons. The VIP-3 has a built in looper, but the Mustang does not. However, to use the looper in the VIP-3, you have to purchase one of the foot controllers. There is not one included with the amp. To get the best use of the VIP, you need the Sanpera II pedal, which costs almost as much as the amp does. The Mustang III has the 2 button footswitch included, and you can add the 4 button and one EXP-1 expression pedal and probably still come out cheaper than buying the Sanpera pedal for the VIP. Also, the VIP-3 has 400 presets compared to the 100 on the Mustang III.

The Vypyr edit program for the VIP series leaves a lot to be desired, as does the preset community. Fender Fuse and the preset community for the Mustang seems to be a much more polished product.

In the end, if I had to choose between the VIP-3 and the Mustang III, I would probably choose the Mustang, mainly because it models mostly Fender Amps.....just my main preference, and nothing against the Peavey Amps modeled in the VIP-3.

Thanks man! How does the VIP 3 sound in relation to your HRDlx tube amp? What is your opinion on the quality of construction of the VIP.

I would be looking at trading my SS22 for a VIP 3 and a Sanpera II and cash on his end. But would I be sick missing the tone of the SS22?

I can get a pretty close sound using the Classic 50 or Budda models in the VIP-3. It can come close using the Twin (the only Fender amp modeled) on the medium gain channel and rolling the gain back. With only the Twin modeled, I have not been able to get it exact. I am not real familiar with how the SuperSonic 22 sounds, but I would guess that you would be able to get close with something the VIP-3 has modeled, But I know the Mustang III has the SuperSonic modeled already.

The VIP is a nice amp, and can probably be dialed in for just about any sound you want. If possible, you should see if you could mess around with one somewhere and see if you can get the sound you want before you get rid of the Supersonic.

The big difference to me between the approach used on the Mustang and that used on other modeling amps is the Mustang provides very specific and and well-known amp models as a starting point. This makes it easier, in my opinion, to achieve the sounds you want because you're modeling specific well-known behaviors to achieve specific sounds. In most other modeled amps it takes a lot more experimentation with the settings to achieve a specific sound of a given type of amp.

I got a chance to try a VIP 3 out and was pretty impressed... so I took the plunge. Acquired a VIP 3 + the Sanpera II AND got a minty Gretsch Electromatic Pro Jet for the SS22.

The SS22 was a great amp, but I was never journeying to the basement to play it... I was always just plugging into my SCX2 in the living room (which, like the Mustang, features the SS burn channel.)

The VIP will be fun to tinker with!
