I have the Mstng 2. I'm thinking of getting a Mstng 3.

I LOVE the 59 Bssmn model, but it's the Only Fender amp model I like (and the other amps aren't for me).
With FUSE, I put the Gain on 3.5. Then, I either put the SAG on Less and add TINY bit of Compression, OR, I leave the SAG on normal and don't use any compression. Then I add a smidgeon of Tape Delay and 'Verb of my choice. That's what I like. I've tried the 2x12C speaker sim, but find I always return return to the Bssmn spkr cab sim (prbbly 4x10).

This is my issue: the 59 Bassman Already has a bit of boxiness to the sound (part of it's charm and I like that). BUT, the actual the Mstng 2s build adds additional boxiness due to the closed back narrow cabinet.

How much difference (better?) would the open back build of the Mstng 3 make over the 2's closed back build?

How do you intend to position the Amp? Against a wall? Elevated on a stand? In or near a corner? The open back Mustang III (and IV) sound very different in each of these settings. They emit a good amount of sound rearward and thus sound much fuller than the closed back MII (even when only a few inches in front of a wall, furniture, etc.)

The MII and MIII do sound different. Both are 1x12 but with different speakers. I only briefly tried the MII, and instantly preferred sound and features of the MIII and MIV. If you can, get some demo time w/ an MIII. If not, go for an MIII and you'll soon love it. It is a terrific amp. The UI is much better, you you get twice as many FXs, and you can upgrade to the Three Mode 4btn fsw w/ built-in LED Tuner Display.

+1 on MusicLaw.

The MIII has a better speaker and the interface is simpler, imo.

Those other amp models may grow on you btw. I Used to use the 59 Bassman exclusively, but now I really count on the Twin Reverb. The Studio Preamp can come in handy from time to time.

I actually temporarily hooked up the amp section of my Mstng 2 to a real nice custom made open back 1x12 (with an Eminence Cannibis Rex). It sounded real good, and I preferred it with the speaker sim off.
I could remove the amp, build a a case for it.....
but at that point, I think I'd just get the Mstng 3 for the extras. I really like the feature of adjusting a lot fromvthe amp with-out having to hook up FUSE. Plus knowing with an optional foot switch I could get the tuner right on the switch/pedal.

I REALLY like the fact that you can, if desired, go straight from guitar to amp with zero pedals. I wouldn't even use the efx loop. Why buy a good modeling amp with decent onboard fx and then add foot pedals.
My sound is very simple and the tape delay and 'verb (Large Hall) satisfy me.
At this point the M.3 sounds like a smart move.

I have both though my MII is the older V1.
The M III is much more lively in terms of response to pick attack and sometimes really sounds bang on the money.
I also mostly use twin reverb now , plus similar fx - little bit of tape delay, bit of vibratone and tiny bit of reverb. The more I have the amp the more I discover different balances of amp and fx that really work. I wasn't expecting to enjoy the Greenbox and Blackbox so much.
I haven't plugged into Fuse for months since my old laptop died.

Thanks- the pick attack difference alone would sell me, but not having to use Fuse (not that it's that hard) is real convenient.

Each Modeled Amp (excluding the Studio PreAmp) in the v2 MIII, MIV and MV and every one of the 100 Preset Memories (not using the Studio PreAmp) offers direct and easy SAG and BIAS parameter adjustments right on the Amp itself w/o FUSE! Adjusting the SAG and BIAS has a distinct effect on the response of the selected Modeled Amp!

Simply press the Amp button 2x to reach Page 2. Select and Adjust the SAG and BIAS controls by Pressing then turning the Data Wheel. The response is instant.

By contouring these parameters and saving them to your Presets, you have even more control over the Mustang!

Take this from an MII user; if you have the cash, get an MIII or MIV. Only get an MV if you're going to be performing in large venues. But the top 3 sound the BEST. Period. I wish I had had the extra cash for the MIII, but I didn't. I only play at home or smaller venues, so the MII works for now. But if you get the chance, get an MIII.

Agreed,

I've had a v1 m-III for some time now, and later on I picked up a v1 m-IV when the online stores were blown them out, as the v2 amps were replacing them.

There's only one or two things you can't do without fuse (one that comes to mind is bright on/off for some of the Fender and Vox models.)

The v2 amps have a few more amp models, and effects/stomp boxes.

if you can swing it, do it. you wont be sorry.

The MV is also a great choice and price point if you already have a console, adequate monitors, and/or a PA.

Even hooked up to a laptop to make all the settings, the MIII is much more user friendly than the MII. The MII sounds good to me, even though the MIII has a little more throat and strength, but the interface makes the MIII the choice for me! I was strapped when I bought mine, but occasionally I play at GF's and use her MI (exact same interface as MII) and it is really painful! You won't ever regret getting the MIII. I can't imagine feeling like the MII would be my final home/small venue amp, but do feel that about the MIII.
