How are your Amps' UTIL menus configured to use the 4Btn Fsw?

With only a Y-cord, both amps are simultaneously seeing the 4btn switch. If the Amps firmware are not configured identically, this could be the conflict. Without seeing the Mustang's wiring schematic (don't know if Fender has published this) and knowing the logic flow of the 4btn fsw triggering and firmware interaction it is likely a process of trial and error.

Aside from buying another 4Btn Fsw (to use with your other Amp), for about the same price, you may find a Stomp Style A/B/Y Box (such as the GuitarCenter/Musician's Friend LiveWire ABY1 unit, or equivalent) may effectively isolate one amp from the other. It may provide Stomp button toggle routing of a single 4 Btn fsw's signals to either amp. In Y mode, you would probably find the same conflict you are getting with the Y-Cord.

thanks MusicLaw for the reply...... both amps are set-up with 4 button "Normal" mode in UTIL....... probably the best option will be to just get another 4 switch pedal because I know that will work.

I'm guessing here but I think there is a micro-controller in the 4 button switch that communicates with the amp. When a button is pressed a code is transmitted via a serial protocol that tells the amp which button was pressed and the "mode" the footswitch is in. The amp then responds with a status code and the display on the footswitch is updated if appropriate.
This means it will be impossible to use the footswitch with 2 amps simultaneously. An A/B switch might work but every time the connection is changed the amp and footswitch will have to sync which may cause a delay.

This is all speculation on my part, I may be completely wrong.

No, you are right - that's how it must work. No other way to get all the information (LEDs, four buttons to press) over a two-wire cable.
An A/B/Y switch should work, though. Each amp would see the switching as if the footswitch was just plugged in and send it the current status.

I finally tried my LiveWire A/B/Y Switchbox with my two (2) Mustang Amps (MIV & MIII, both v2) to see if a single 4btn fsw would operate properly.

The short answer is: No!

Here's what happens: As soon as the A/B box is toggled (switched from A to B or B to A) the 4 btn fsw's LEDs and LED Display Panel no longer show the current status. Although they do not go dark, they remain illuminated in the configuration as they are at powerup. Even so, the newly selected Amp does respond correctly to all the fsw button's command sequences! Practically, this loss of visual staus renders the A/B of little use in this configuration. The microcontroller in the Mustang circuitry immediately resets when the amp power is cycled back on. There is no need to reconfigure the Amps nor 4btn fsw via the UTIL menu.

Getting another 4btn fsw is the way to go! Plus you'll now have a backup unit should one fail.

BTW, with two Amps and two 4btn fsws, unless you prefer to configure either fsw in Locked Mode (and adhere Brother Printer labels to the switch for enhanced legibility as one Forum poster's pic shows) once you configure each amp for how you desire the amp to respond with the fsw, the 4btn fsws are interchangeable.
