Well, the electric guitars were recorded in this manner. Not only that, they were all recorded using the Mustang III's USB interface. I sometimes mic the speaker, but I don't think I did that on any of these tracks. The acoustic guitar tracks were miked. I believe the Rickenbacker bass was recorded direct on everything. Mostly through a Zoom B3 USB interface, although it was plugged directly into my mixer on "Heartbleed."

There are a lot of great vintage tones on the album. I used the '59 Bassman model on several songs, a '65 Twin Reverb model, a customized patch using the Brit '60s (VOX) model and a few others I can't recall. Give them a listen at:
https://josephrellis.bandcamp.com/album/solidbody-sessions

There are 13 songs + a bonus track if you get the album. Click the "info" link on each song to read more about the instruments that were used.

The song "A-Minor Distraction" is a free download. Just enter $0 for the price. Be sure to try some of the lossless "audiophile" download formats - they blow mp3s out of the water! You should be able to stream all the songs, but the 128-bit mp3 streams don't really do them justice.

You can download a free open source Windows platform player that supports about all those formats at:

Sounds authentic to me. Nicely done.

How do you like bandcamp?
And... what the heck is a "beat buddy"?

Thanks, fendermike!

I like bandcamp okay, so far. I just joined last week.

Here is some info on the BeatBuddy:

I should mention that bandcamp also supports downloading songs in Apple's lossless ALAC format. I tried that for the album and was able to import it into my iTunes on my PC, so no special player is required for that format. Nice to know. It was a ZIP archive, but when you extract the songs, they have the .m4a extension.

I uploaded a couple of singles the other day, so be sure to check them out, too!

I've recorded quite a few singles since releasing "Solidbody Sessions" in July. They're all at

https://josephrellis.bandcamp.com/.

FYI, I'm giving away free download codes for "Solidbody Sessions" for anyone who buys a single (anything non-zero for those "name your price" singles). Not a bad deal for a buck (or less). I recommend downloading in Apple loss-less format, since it is better quality than mp3s and you can import the album right into your iTunes. I'll do this until I run out of download codes. There are 97 remaining, last I checked.

RE: Bandcamp... have to get over the fact that anyone can snag mp3s with bandcamp2mp3.com etc. It's a new world... and everyone has to decide how to navigate it in a way that seems right to them.

Yeah, all they'll get is the crappy mp3-128 version. There are always thieves who think copyright laws don't apply to them. I don't appreciate your advertising this illegal service in your reply. It's bad enough without you telling even the clueless turds where they can steal people's music.

Bandcamp advertises the illegal service somewhere on their site as well, just so its users know... it's the reality of the new musical landscape and shouldn't be ignored IMO. On the other hand, you don't have to stream mp3s from your albums/singles if you don't want to -- I have established musician friends who have gone this route when using Bandcamp for their digital sales.

On the upside, the new digital world brings more new music to more people and allows more musicians to get their stuff heard which is good... add to this the ease that people are able to record and produce their stuff DIY and creative opportunities have been greatly expanded... even if it is gotten much harder to monetize your musical efforts.

I'm not really worried about them downloading my songs (I'm not that popular, LOL). But I despise piracy sites and I don't think they should be given any "lip service" on public forums. Think before you post next time.

I did *think* before posting this! It was in response to a general question regarding Bandcamp and this is a legitimate issue that artists should think long and hard about before putting stuff up online and there are no easy answers! I also pointed out that to avoid the potential of "piracy," that artists could elect to not allow people to stream or make "unauthorized copies" of their stuff on Bandcamp.

I also gave reference to Bandcamp pointing this out directly on their site. Here is their warning (which you should have read when you set up your page there):

"One of my fans showed me a totally easy way that someone could STEAL my music off of Bandcamp using RealPlayer 14.1 beta 3, or RipTheWeb.com, or by going into Temporary Internet Files and renaming blah blah blah. What are you doing about this grave problem?

Nothing. Since streams on Bandcamp are full-length, it’s true that someone could use one of the above methods to access the underlying MP3-128. And sure, we could throw some technical hurdles in their way, but if they hit one of those hurdles, it’s not like they’d slap their forehead and open their wallet. Instead, they’d just move on to some other site where those restrictions aren’t in place, and you’ll have squandered the chance to make your own site the premier destination for those seemingly cheap, but enthusiastic, word-spreading, and potentially later money-spending fans. In other words, the few people employing the above methods are better thought of as an opportunity, not a lost sale."

Bandcamp also wrote this good essay on how artists like you and I who are using Bandcamp should think about "piracy": http://newmusicstrategies.com/2008/04/0 ... ut-piracy/

Anyway, I brought up the issue because I think it is a fascinating subject.

Regarding my experience with Bandcamp, I've gotten some exposure from people listening to my stuff there, but no real sales. I think today, most sales for *Indie* artists come from fan support, so you need to build that up. And yeah, on most scales, I'd say I pretty much "suck," but there are people that still like what I'm doing... and most my sales support comes from people who maybe ripped off some of my songs off Bandcamp and then went to Amazon and bought a physical copy of my CD... the way to beat "piracy" is make people feel good about supporting your efforts! Anyway, I'll never make any money off my music, but it's still really important to me.

We all read the bandcamp info when we signed up and I was already aware of tools for stealing content from reverbnation and soundcloud before I even heard of bandcamp. There are lots of ways of doing it, which I will not enumerate, because I'm not trying to show the world how knowledgeable I am about such subjects (unlike you).

Don't be such a troll! I'm not replying to your posts saying, "Sound great. Now here's how to steal it," which is in effect what you did. As for replying to the "bandcamp question," it was directed to me. He asked how I liked it. I hardly see where that justified you to reply with information about a service for stealing streaming content.

Nothing I did was meant to step on your toes or to be a "troll" or be a "know it all." Sorry I took this as a public discussion thread and entered with what I thought was a spirit of camaraderie (being both musicians, recording artists and on bandcamp). I'll try not intrude in your posts in the future. Good luck with all your projects!

The truth is any time you upload audio to the Internet and allow others to access the content without paying first, you are running the risk of illegal downloads. It just comes with the territory and it's no secret.

The actual audio has about as much value as a Microsoft Windows installation CD. The CD is practically an intangible. The value lies in the licensing. If you do not have copyright on your own songs, they have no place on the Internet (IMO), except as a donation to whoever can make something out of it.

As far as Johnny the little "pirate" who "stole" your music by downloading an MP3 to his computer ... unless he successfully makes money off selling your songs, or charges his friends to listen to them, you really don't have a case. Just be flattered that he would listen to it at all, or keep it off the Internet until you have done it the right way just like all the other artists out there.
