In a separate thread, it was brought up that using a tube preamp might richen up sound from direct recording and Mustang amps. Just wondering if anyone here is going this approach and if they think it is worth the effort. (That's why I started a specific new thread. Thanks!)

Also, looking, the Art Tube MP Studio preamps pop up. Anyone familiar with these and have an opinion whether the basic one is good enough or if the V3 with presets is worth getting.

Other than just getting richer fuller guitar recordings I'd probably try to use it for vocals and my mic.

Thanks!!!

Could this also be used to lessen the somewhat "glassy" sound? Both my Mustang III and my Mustang Floor have this.

I dunno, but I have tasted many preamps in my day and currently own a professional recording studio and the Art Tube preamp I had for just under a week long ago couldn't make anything sound but butt ugly. Sorry Art!!! This was around 18 years ago so please take my 2 cents with a grain of salt. Just sayin!

I use my ART alot. Vocals, keyboards, acoustic guitar going into a SS amp. Works really well with my Peavey modeling amp but haven't tried it with my son's Mustang. I keep the gain pretty low - just enough to add some richness and take away that digital sound. I start out low and turn it up as I turn down the amp's "digital tubes" till I find the sweet spot. That and I try to match the volume through the preamp to the volume without it in the chain. Same volume but a fuller and warmer signal going into the amp. Then just set and forget. The settings are generic enough that you don't really have to reset it every time you switch presets on the amp. Might even be better with a Mustang. The Peavey doesn't like active pickups and I have to tweak the presets when I plug one in but haven't heard anyone complain about them with Mustangs. Might be able to use more tube gain or not have to turn down the amp's digital tubes as much to compensate. Just got a 150 watt Rumble bass amp - haven't tried it with the ART yet but looking forward to it.

Thanks! Looks like I can get a basic ART model for next to nothing used on ebay. I'll let you know how I like it after I try it out! :)

There is another guy on the forum that says he uses the preamp section of a Marshall head between his guitar and his Mustang with a lot of gain. Think if I was going to drag a Marshall head around I would plug it right into a cabinet instead of a Mustang. I'm over 50 and want to get down the stairs and out the door in one trip - modeling amp in one hand and guitar in the other with the ART in the gig bag pocket. If I bring my tube amp I have to carry it out by itself and go back for the guitar. Couldn't carry a Marshall head, modeling amp and guitar in one trip either.
I'd like to try the Super Champ X2. Modeling amp with not only a tube preamp but a tube power section. Might not have 200 presets but if has the 6 or so that I would use and doesn't weight too much it might be worth it.
