I have been unable to get a moderate amount of distortion or "crunch" from my Mustang II. I have experimented with the settings until I forget where I am and what I've tried. I've tried downloads from the fuse software, and they have been unsatisfactory as well. I'm able to achieve a lot of effects, and in general like the amp, but I either have no distortion or too much that sounds really muddy and not a "crunchy" rock sound that I'm looking for.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

V1 or V2?

On my MIV V2 I like the '59 Bassman with gain set just short of "4".

I agree with Bill The bassman amp model should do it

Have you tried this one from Shane's presets? (intheblues)
https://fuse.fender.com/mustang/presets ... s-bb-king/

The Twin, Deluxe and the Princeton should as well (have you looked for the presets up in the high numbered pre-sets where there are the ones named "Basic Twin, Basic Princeton" Those don't have any effects or stomps.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for, but:

The 90's metal amp can get some surprisingly clean and light crunch sounds, if you wind the gain way down. I was messing around one day, and tried that model out. I also added some mids, turned the channel vol down to match my existing presets, and rolled off a bit of treble. Switching from the default 4x12V cab sim to the 4x12G or 2x12C makes a huge difference, too. As this is a model of a Mesa Dual Rec, the default cab is a Vintage 30 loaded mesa 4x12. This cab model, to me, sounds harsh and kinda nasty- esp with a ton of distortion.

The 4x12G is modelled after a Marshall cab with Greenbacks. Not sure what the 2x12C is, but it's almost universally a favorite of Mustang users. Both of these sound MUCH better for rock/ classic rock/blues rock to my ears. I've also seen the Supersonic cab get plenty of praise, too. Try changing speaker cab models around.

But, yeah- the 90's Metal model is very flexible. Relatively minor tweaks changed it from a full on howling metal beast, to a nice clean tone! With humbuckers, the tone is right at the edge, or just over the hump. Change to a nice single coil, and it's a sweet clean sound. There's plenty in between those two extremes- inc some nice rocky crunch, I just decided I liked the clean/just barely crunch enough to make it my 02 preset.

Oh that's interesting to say that you cannot get low to moderate crunch out the Mustang because one of the reasons I bought the Mustang was because I was very impressed with the crunch from the amp - something traditionally modellers have now been good at.

I find with my Les Paul Standard the British 60s does the trick quite well. I change the cab from a 2x12 to 4x12. Think you can do this with the Fuse software - but I don't own a II so cannot confirm this.

I got your email, but I've been gone for a while. These guys are giving you some good ideas to try. For your moderate crunch you might try the Brit 80s patch. Start with gain on about 2 and adjust volume to where it sounds right. Then continue increasing the gain a little at a time until you hear what you're looking for. Often you will discover that what sounds right the first time isn't quite right in a month. Just keep noodling with Gain, Volume, and tone...especially if you have both single coil and humbucker equipped guitars. You might need two different sets of patches. A little patience also helps. Good luck and God bless!

Also don't forget you can just roll off the volume on your guitar to clean the sound up.

Just to add an opinion... this topic bemuses me because "moderate crunch" is what I find the Mustang excels at, across the board, very easily. I suppose everyone's definition of "moderate crunch" is different, but for most of the amp models, a few seconds tweaking the amp gain, guitar volume, etc, yields a very nice just-breaking-up sound. They're all different sounds, as befits the different amp models, but they're all good and crunchy.

What kind of sound are you looking for? "Moderate crunch" can be a bit ambiguous.

I found that a good "Classic Rock" Marshall sound can be attained using the British 70s model. In my experience (on the mustang II v.2 and to my ears) I find the 4x12 cabs to sound a bit unnatural. I found pairing it with the 65 Deluxe tightens it up a bit. I also found that if you pair it with the Blackbox stomp set to low to medium gain, it gives me the nice Classic Marshall distortion I grew up liking. But that's me.

I also like the Bassman and 57 Deluxe with the Fuzz or Greenbox as well.
