I've owned a number of phase shifters and other classic, even grail modulators. Try using the phaser with some delay. Try the Large plate for reverb, and make it dark sounding, you'll be fine with it. phaser, stereo delay, maybe ping pong, and the large plate. If you don't make any one effect too pronounced, but more blended, and behind the guitar, the results can be astounding. make some A/B patches next to each other, for comparison tweaking. I don't know, but unless it's for a particular gimmick, I use the phaser type effect as an ambient background tool rather than an in the face thing.

If you're shooting for a heavy/metal type mod, the flanger will do what you're looking for, as in frequency sweep and shift. try the different flange options, I don't recall which one worked like a VH 90 effect usage, but i think it's the default flanger just dialed back on level/depth.

The other verbs, you can get decent by tweaking but i'd try checking the presets for jumpoff points too.

I start with the amp sound first, guitar, eq, etc, then really dial in the verb last. but you may have to go back and forth a little. i use the flanger more than the phaser, but was just using the phaser as above, it was good.

Good luck. you can get almost anything out of the m3 if you take a little time to tweak around.
