I bet some of the very experienced players given some quality time with say a Mustang III and learned how to use one properly, could really make it sing.

I've been playing for around 50 years, I would say I have a bit of experience.

I've got three tube amps, (Marshall Combo, Fender 4x10 HR Deville, and a Gibson Class A Goldtone 2x12 combo)

These amps all sound very good. and they are all a PITA to move around, setup, and maintain.

I've got two Mustangs (A IV that I just leave setup where my cover band rehearses) and an MIII that I use as a practice/jam rig.

No one has ever told me, "Gee, your tube amps sound a lot better" -- No one... Did a gig last summer with my MIV., one of the guys in the crowd was as well a seasoned player. he asked me on break, "how the f---- are you getting those sounds out of a Fender Deville???"

"I'm not, it's a Mustang IV"

"Wait,, what?? that's one of those Fender Modelers isn't it?"

"yep"

"holy crap!"

"yep!"

if you know what you are doing with these amps, spend a little bit of time to get a few good sounding presets, they absolutely rock. The beauty is in the ease in which you can travel with them. I can set down one of these "stangs", run the foot switches out to where my mic is, plug in, and... that's... it...

The guy I've worked with since 1977 bought an MIII after about 45 minutes of noodling with mine. There's nothing they can't do and quite well as a matter of fact.

Are there compromises? you betchya, but - this is the case with anything.

As much as I miss my Hot Rod Deville, I can't see myself buying another big heavy tube amp for the sake of buying a big heavy tube amp.

I'm having way to much fun with the Mustang II so looking forward to what the future brings.

Oh and to stay on topic...

I am not disappointed by the Large Plate Reverb on the Mustang. In fact... its my go to Reverb

I've never understood people's obsession with spring reverbs. From the first time I played though a real Twin Reverb the boingy-ness of its spring reverb was my least favorite part of its sound. I wanted to hear a plate or hall reverb sound that I could hear from recordings.

I think part of the problem --- most often --- with things like Reverb, and Delay settings (as well as other effects) people are just dialing in way too much.

you don't need a lot of "verb" to give your sound some of the ambiance you're looking for and lets be realistic, too much delay in the mix, and your sound is totally lost.

It's all about the tastes of the artist and listener.

Spring reverbs have their historic and characteristic place in the spectrum of ambient enhancement styles. Not my favorite, but they are familiar to a great many as they've been in Fender's Amps for decades and have been heard by hundreds of millions of people in live and recorded works.

Outboard and Studio gear FX offers lots of reverb variations. One of my favorites is still the Yamaha SPX90!

At least we Mustang owners have a nice variety of reverb choices right from the box and with variable controls well beyond the basics.

The "dialing in way too much" projects could comprise an entire musical sub-genre by themselves! ;)

There are countless tracks with way over the top effects and processing. Nonetheless, there are lots of fans that love those sounds. May not be my taste, but that certainly doesn't make it wrong.

There are a few effects in the Mustang's effects banks (Triangle, Ring) that I would never likely find of any use for the material I prefer. Nonetheless, I'm confident there are plenty who find use for them.

you're 100% spot on. everyone is going for "their" sound.

IMHO,, for me, a little goes a long way.

I use compression, overdrive, delay, occasionally modulation, and reverb is usually set around around 2...

Agreed, MusicLaw and KidBlast.

I miss the reverb I had in my long gone Lexicon MPX-1.

Not my style at all, but when I'm jamming with either my girlfriend or younger son, I'll throw some heavy "OrangeBox" distortion on my lead! It's fun! :)

Just about every preset I download is drowning in verb. I don't get how that works. I find if its past 2 it's too much. I agree. Just need a touch. And I agree on he boing. I want to like it. The plate verb just sounds too good

For general playing I agree. Most of the time only a hint of reverb is needed, but I play more ambient, post-rock style music, so a heavy dose of reverb is essential :)

I think the desirability of the reverb "boing" sound originates from the old surf music days, early 60's Dick Dale and so forth. Endless Summer, The Astronauts, Ventures. If you'd never heard of those bands, and had never heard that sound, you might, on first listen, think it's actually kind of silly-sounding. But it became a kind of de facto standard for guitar reverb.

you're absolutely correct.. I am old enough to relate and agree 100%. the thing is, as we grow as musicians, and technology leap frogs as we age.. what we tend to "like" in our sound changes.

I used to layer on gobs of gain, and enough delay and reverb to make a monkey go bonkers. That was a long long time ago...

I've long since gone the other way, and I am a faithful follower of the "less is more" religion.
