Got home from work tonight and after dinner fired up the M III expecting to have a lot of fun playing on my new amp. I got this really annoying noise coming out of it. Not a hum but more of a fizz or static sound.

When I tried to rotate the selector dial to another preset, I got this awful squeal or static on pretty much any of the presets. I plugged in a couple different guitars and had it with any of them...some worse than others.

I wasn't having this issue the first two days. Any idea what might be the problem? I bought the warranty from GC and they have a 30 day return policy so I'm not worried. But if it's "user error" I was hoping y'all might have some insight.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried a different cable between guitar and amp? Do you still get the noise if nothing at all (not even a cable) is plugged into the amp?

Also (as you don't mention this explicitly): is there anything else connected to the amp, either inline between the guitar and amp input, or the aux socket, or the fx-send/return sockets, or even the headphones and USB sockets? Unplug everything else and see if that makes a difference. Unplug the Mustang footswitch(es) and expression pedal, if you have those.

Finally, make sure all audio cables (principally your guitar cable) are nowhere near any other cable or electrical equipment, and are reasonably straight, not coiled up. Also turn off any computer, etc, that's near the amp. See if any of that makes a difference.

Scott-uk. Thanks for the reply. To answer your questions in order...

Haven't tried a different cable yet, will do so.

If I unplug the guitar-no noise.

I did plug in headphones and an AUX cable so I could listen to backing tracks while playing with headphones. The noise seemed to continue after I disconnected same.

Nothing else plugged into the amp.

Cables are all laying in a pile. Never been an issue with the M I but I'll try that.

I have one of those Google boxes-no computer. It's a couple feet away but again, no issues before.

I'll try your suggestions and report back.

Thanks!

UPDATE.

I checked everything Scott-uk suggested. Unplugging everything before turning it on seemed to make the difference.

Once I turned it on and plugged in my guitar, no noise at all. I then plugged in my headphones and them the aux and it was totally quiet.

So I'm not sure what the issue was exactly but it seems fine now.

Thanks Scott-uk!

Sounds like the problem is a faulty guitar cable or its connectors. Could be an intermittent dodgy connection. If it happens again, first thing to try is a different cable (and/or simply making sure the cable is fully plugged-in at both ends).

Might also be a problem with the amp's input socket, but eliminate the cable as a possibility before worrying about that.
