Before I order the pedal.. can the volume be placed at the beginning of the Mustang's signal chain? I was hoping to use it sort of as an alternate guitar volume knob for different levels of gain. I searched the forum but couldn't find any info. Thanks!

THANK YOU. Not sure why I didn't find that answer. That's kind of a bummer.. I guess I could try messing with either the amp or OD gain parameter but that's just not the same. Oh well. Not a deal breaker.

It depends which amp model you're using. For example, the Mustang's "Gain" control actually maps to the "Volume" knob on the Fender Twin Reverb model (and the Mustang's "Volume" control is an overall preset volume, not affecting the modelled amp at all). As (I think) the Twin Reverb's Volume control is a pre-amp volume (rather than an amp master volume), adjusting this via the EXP-1 is effectively at the beginning of the signal chain (if you have no pre- effects), achieving what you want.

Of course, if you do have any pre- effects, you just set the EXP-1 to control the Level of that effect to keep your volume early in the signal chain.

But if you really need an extra volume control before anything that happens inside the Mustang, then your only option is a conventional analogue volume pedal in-line between the guitar and amp input.

Thanks for your input (no pun intended)! I've been spoiled over the years with my BOSS GT boards; I've become accustomed to using the foot volume first in the chain for various natural stages of clean/gain. Loving the 'Stang too much and don't miss the complexity of floorboards so I'll just have to bust out my EB volume and be done with it.. and save $90 while I'm at it.
