I received a Mustang I roughly four years ago, and have used it as frequently as possible since. As of late, the amp has (twice) turned off on its own accord; followed by me checking its cord, and turning it off and back on. I'm aware that as amps age, they can wear out, and need to be replaced. However, on several occasions, I have brought my amp to a drummer friend of mine, and played with him. As I'm sure most, if not all of you know, drums are obscenely loud. So, I had to turn the master volume to 10.

I'm curious as to whether or not me playing with my amp at full volume can negatively effect it. I'm sure there is some repercussion, but I'd like to know how serious it is; and if I should no longer play at max volume for future reference.

Sounds like you need the "Spinal Tap" mod....

I think a better idea is to no longer play with drummers that don't have the skill or discipline to control THEIR volume.

ANY amp played on 10 is being stressed more than is good for reliability. It's anyone's guess whether u will run into issues but it's a much better idea to use an amp that can hang with a drummer w/o being on 10. I'd start thinking about a mustang III. You will have other advantages too like the LCD which is a HUGE benefit. But it will also hang with the loudest drummer w/o being near 10 on the master.

Just as important would be what and how you're playing through it. Turning it up to 10 and playing soft fingerstyle guitar won't stress it much, but playing a bass or a Hammond B3 through it is a different story. Presumably though, you are playing guitar loud enough to be heard over the drums. Bass notes result in large excursions of the speaker cone, and I think that used to be an issue where warping of the cone resulted in the voice coil hitting the sides, or tearing of the suspension.

I don't know what are in the amp circuit. There is probably some self-protection by way of crowbars circuits or thermal cutoffs. No fuses visible from the outside though.

If I had to guess though, I suspect that the mechanical stresses on the speaker are the biggest problem with cranking it up to 10.
