Clearly positioning effect pre or post amp makes a difference, but my question is... does the order of effects pre-amp make a difference. For example, if I use Overdrive (stomp) and Wah (modulation) will it make a difference if I put the OD 1st or the Wah 1st?

If I understand you correctly you don't really get any choice in the matter. The Mustang has four effects slots pre-amp and they are in a specific order: stomp, modulation, reverb, delay. When you add a wah effect it goes in the modulation slot. When you add an overdrive it goes in the stomp slot. Therefore the overdrive will always be positioned before the wah.

They are if you configure a preset on the amp. If you use FUSE, you can put the effects in any order, and put them pre- or post- the amp model.

Yes it will make a difference. The key questions are: does it make enough of a difference that you (or your audience) will be able to tell; is that difference something that (to you) sounds better or worse?

You should try both and pick the one you like best. With the overdrive first, you'll have a constant amount of distortion that is being frequency-selected by the wah. With the wah first, you'll get a variable amount of distortion as the wah changes the amplitude of (part of) the signal being fed into the overdrive. However, the distinction is probably going to be quite subtle, as the wah affects the higher frequencies, which are lower in amplitude (compared to lower frequencies). So those higher frequencies are less affected by the distortion anyway (as distortion/overdrive works by clipping the peak amplitude of the signal - ie the lower frequencies).

For completeness, Wah isn't really a modulation effect (even though some Mustang models include an additional wah in the 'mod' section). A modulation effect is made by combining ("modulating") two waveforms. So a phaser, for example, works by combining two out-of-phase versions of the same waveform to create a frequency-selective filter. A wah is also a frequency-selective filter, but is made by just boosting/attenuating particular frequencies in a single waveform (using, in the analogue world, a "simple" resistor/capacitor network). So no modulation involved.

However the classic or more known wha-wha effect is obtained with the distortion after the wha filter . The other order allows to obtain synth-like filters (frequencies sweeps of the distorted tone) and more harsh tones: for example a Dunlop fuzz/wha vintage pedal, as said some times ago, has right the fuzz before the wha circuit.

edit:
i meant Danelectro fuzz/wha pedal

Thanks for the info. I also found a place in the FUSE manual that says that position matters. I will give it a try this weekend. I am looking to make the wah more traditional sounding.
